Synopsis
For use in schools and libraries only. The author describes his spring 1996 trek to Mt. Everest, a disastrous expedition that claimed the lives of eight climbers, and explains why he survived., When Jon Krakauer reached the summit of Mt. Everest in the early afternoon of May 10,1996, he hadn't slept in fifty-seven hours and was reeling from the brain-altering effects of oxygen depletion. As he turned to begin the perilous descent from 29,028 feet (roughly the cruising altitude of an Airbus jetliner), twenty other climbers were still pushing doggedly to the top, unaware that the sky had begun to roil with clouds... Into Thin Airis the definitive account of the deadliest season in the history of Everest by the acclaimed Outside journalist and author of the bestselling Into the Wild. Taking the reader step by step from Katmandu to the mountain's deadly pinnacle, Krakauer has his readers shaking on the edge of their seat. Beyond the terrors of this account, however, he also peers deeply into the myth of the world's tallest mountain. What is is about Everest that has compelled so many poeple--including himself--to throw caution to the wind, ignore the concerns of loved ones, and willingly subject themselves to such risk, hardship, and expense? Written with emotional clarity and supported by his unimpeachable reporting, Krakauer's eyewitness account of what happened on the roof of the world is a singular achievement.

  • Obsessed with Everest (maybe someday )

Great book from Krakauer 's point of view. I've been obsessed with the idea of attempting everest or even just visiting the area for the past 6 mo. I can understand their obsession with reaching the top of the world. Even with no mountaineering experience at all myself, I would love to attempt it even knowing it could be deadly and after finishing this book it really hits hard that anything can happen up there, even the strongest climbers can become part of the mountain forever. My thoughts go out to Rob hall and Scott fisher's family and everyone who have lost their lives up there. It's part of them now and they are part of the the mighty Everest forever. Awesome book! ! My next read will be from Anatoli Boukreev's point of view next from the 1996 expedition that went wrong, it's called ...

  • Educational and interesting

I honestly did not know what to expect when I bought this book other than I saw some good reviews and I was looking for something "non-fiction". I found it difficult to put down and learned a lot about an activity that I would consider totally insane. It was interesting and educational so it achiever my goals. Somewhat similar to "Into the Wild" which is also by the same author.
