An interesting collection of DVD's put out by Sony. Although only 3 films in this box set, it's thankfully the only one that doesn't contain the Tri-Star abomination. (Unlike the 5 & 7 packs) Unless you're a fan an understand the continuity of the Godzilla series, this collection might not make a lot of sense to some. It has two films from the showa era ('Son of G' - 1967, & 'G vs MechaG' - 1974) then a film from the Millenium era (G: Tokyo SOS - 2003) which is a sequel to "G Against MeachaG" from the year before (but not included in this set). I won't go into a full description of how these film era's work and why it can get so confusing. However, the DVD's themselves are descent releases. There's no bells & whistles to this set (with the exception of some behind-the-scenes footage for Tokyo SOS). But they are at least presented in wide screen, and give the option of hearing english dubbed, or Japanese with sub-titles. The credits are left in tact, and even translated. The image quality probably isn't 100% superb, however, it's still sharp and clear, even played on my less than average DVD player. Although not as thorough as the Classic Media releases, this is certainly an improvement over the butchered Heisei series Sony released 10 years ago. Oh how I'd love to see them re-released properly. My only biggest complaint is Sony pasting the english opening title for 'Tokyo SOS' over top of the fantastic Japanese graphic. You actually can't read anything it looks so muddled. But, that's a minor point. This is otherwise a nice set. The box is nice, the DVD covers look great and the disks themselves even have a nice image printed right on them. If you're trying to complete a collection, these are great fillers for the DVD shelf! Well recommended for a North American release!Read full review
If you're a big fan of watching giant monsters battle it out and wreak havoc on Tokyo in the process, then this is a great set to pick up. A few thoughts on each film: Son of Godzilla: I'm one of the very few kaiju nerds out there who actually loves Minya (the titular monster), so this, to me, is a classic. This was definitely one of my faves growing up, catching it on Saturday afternoon in the glory days of UHF. There's a lot of action in this one, including a memorable face-off between Godzilla and a gang of giant praying mantises. And Minya blowing rings of smoke instead of a concentrated beam of radiation? Adorable. And Godzilla and Minya take on a giant spider in the finale. What's not to love? Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla: Dinosaurs and giant robots. What could be cooler? How about a giant robot dinosaur? Genius. Absolute genius. This is the first meeting between Godzilla and his villainous mechanical counterpart. So that, right there, is reason enough to recommend it. But wait. There's more. Anguirus (the spikey-backed, ankylosaur-like monster who was the Big G's first opponent, then later became an ally) is here, too! And some big freaky-looking dog-eared creature called King Seesar! If you're a fan of the genre, there's a lot to appreciate here. Godzilla: Tokyo SOS- This is a recent Godzilla film, so you may not have seen this one yet. But don't worry, it's still guys in monster suits, with very little CGI involved (Phew! CGI is the devil). This is a rarity in the G series in that it actually references previous films and events that took place in said films have some bearing on what happens here. First off, it's a direct sequel to the film that preceded it, "Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla" (no, not "Vs.", "Against". It was released one year before this one, not in the 70's, like "Vs." was). And it has ties to the 1961 classic "Mothra". So yes, Mecha and Mothra are both in this one, and it adds up to a pretty impressive 3 way battle at the end. A worthy entry to a terrific series!Read full review

A bit of the old and the new in one set. One disc has extras, unusual for a Godzilla DVD. High quality.
