I had wanted to purchase a lens in this focal length but could not afford the more recent AF version. When this lens became available at a reasonable price I purchased it and was very surprised. After testing on both a bench and the field I have concluded this is a very sharp lens, a bargain sleeper. The manual focus was not a problem (I did use MF for many years until AF was a standard feature so this was not new). The real surprise was the sharpness of the images. Using a D800 the raw images could be cropped considerably and still produce stunning images. Generally I set exposures manually and so this was also no problem. The lens is rugged and solid. I had forgotten the feel of an all metal, manual focus prime lens. If there was an issue it was the weight of the system. I know some say they can hand hold this focal length, but the only really good images (13" x 19") were with a very, very sturdy tripod (Versa TVC-33 & RRS 55 ball head) or a large bean bag. Overall I am very pleased with this purchase and at this point have no desire to replace it soon with a later model.Read full review
The large f2.8 140 mm dia ED front elements pull in a lot of light and this lens excels even for astrophotography. Biokeh is good and sharpness is superior. This all metal sturdy legacy lens functions well on a high end full frame DSLR Nikon and autofocus is great. It is hand holdable although a monopod or tripod is recommended. If you want the best, this is it.

Great Lens! With Limitations. This is a manual focus lens. It also offers no help in metering your cameras exposure settings. If you have a modern camera, say a D3 or D300, you have some advanced metering aids inside the camera to help compensate for this older lens. Auto ISO is one of them. By setting the shutter to manual, say 1000, and setting the aperture where you want it, the camera automatically sets the correct workable ISO settings. In a camera like D3 with such high usable ISO settings, this lens is a snap to use. This is not a VR lens, you are going to meed a sturdy mono-pod or tripod. Just let the green dot tell you when you have perfect focus and snap away. If you can get a perfect copy of this lens at under $4000 you just saved yourself enough money to purchase a new D3.Read full review
