About this product

Product Information

In Raising Cain, Dan Kindlon, Ph.D., and Michael Thompson, Ph.D., two of the country's leading child psychologists, share what they have learned in more than thirty-five years of combined experience working with boys and their families. They reveal a nation of boys who are hurting--sad, afraid, angry, and silent. Kindlon and Thompson set out to answer this basic, crucial question: What do boys need that they're not getting? They illuminate the forces that threaten our boys, teaching them to believe that "cool" equals macho strength and stoicism. Cutting through outdated theories of "mother blame," "boy biology," and "testosterone," the authors shed light on the destructive emotional training our boys receive--the emotional miseducation of boys. Kindlon and Thompson make a compelling case that emotional literacy is the most valuable gift we can offer our sons, urging parents to recognize the price boys pay when we hold them to an impossible standard of manhood. They identify the social and emotional challenges that boys encounter in school and show how parents can help boys cultivate emotional awareness and empathy--giving them the vital connections and support they need to navigate the social pressures of youth.

  • A Must Read for Mother's w/Boys & Wives w/Husbands

I originally got a copy of this book at a free Garage Sale. 1/3 of the way through this book I started applying what it taught me and in less than a week I noticed a marked change in my responses to my 2 sons misbehavior, therefore causing a marked improvement in their behavior. This book will give you insight into the male psyche even they themselves don't quite understand. I would recommend this book to all men that didn't grow up in a perfect household (that's all of you) and for anyone who interacts with and/or cares about the emotional well-being of our next generation of men. Wives, this book will help you understand the way your husband thinks and maybe why he is the way he is. I am certain this saved us from having a runaway 15 yr. old son at our house. I simply had to buy one ...

  • Raising Cain

I am the mother of 3 incredible boys all under the age of 2. After the birth of my twin boys my Doctor, an outstanding OBGYN recommended that my husband and I read this book. I didnt run out to the nearest book store and purchase this book, it didnt even cross my mind till my oldest hit about 20 months and his "boy" personality began to emerge, thats when it hit me, I have 3 boys that I am responsible for... and I want to raise them right. This book gives great insight into the mind of boys and how their environment shapes their lives..emotionally and physically. I plan to use what I have learned from Raising Cain to help me to raise 3 emotionally secure men.

  • "Reviving Ophelia" for boys, and almost as impressive.

The book is filled with real live experiences the authors have had with boys. It was valuable just to have those scenarios brought up and talked about in such an intelligent and readable way. 2 downsides, however. 1. it focussed a bit much on the by-line of the book "protecting the emotional life of boys" by not talking about other issues very much. 2. I felt too many of the stories didn't have solutions tacked onto them. I'm a little linear sequential and prefer a clear moral to my stories and some solutions I can put into practice, but that's all answered by what the book says is the solution to the issue on the whole.

  • A Must Read!

Raising Cain should be required reading for all parents, caretackers and teachers of boys. It is very insightful with lots of antedotal stories. Altho it is a serious topic, it is an easy read. As a teacher and a mom of a boy, I am trying to follow the suggestions in this book. It has made me a more patient and understanding parent/teacher. I have printed many of the statements and posted them around my classroom for me to see and remember. If this book helps just one boy, then the authors have done a great thing!!
