Lucille Ball at her best!!
I saw this film when it was first released, and never forgot how much I loved it. If you are a fan of musicals with great actors, absolutely engaging music, beautiful sets, sumptuous wardrobes, and a plot that has both comical and dramatic elements, this is for you. It is true entertainment. Lucy may not win any awards for singing, but her incredible energy, presence, and expressive face make up for musical range. The southern "riding to the hunt" sequence is hilarious (one of the very few slapstick comedy moments), and the hunt finale (MAME) with an enormous cast of singers and dancers, is one of the best scenes ever filmed. Watch (and marvel) at the height of Lucy's chorus line kicks with the other ladies of the hunt. Her co-stars Bea Arthur (a born comedienne) and Robert Preston with ... The song "Loving You," sung by Preston, only appears in this version of MAME, along with such favorites as "We Need a Little Christmas" (first made popular by Angela Lansbury who starred in the Broadway version), "If He Walked into My Life Today," "You're My Best Girl," and "Open a New Window." MAME, a resourceful, adventurous, accepting woman, willing to explore the world and who treats everyone with respect, is someone many of us would emulate, and Lucy brings the character to life in a warm and uniquely wonderful way. Lucy's Mistake
What a shame the viewing public will never get to see Angela Lansbury as "Mame." Instead we have Lucille Ball. The only thing that this role requires besides acting is a great singings voice, and this Lucy does not have. Other then that she does a great job. The movie it self was reviewed by critics because of the bad writing. And the star's horrible singing. This still aplies but the movies is getting better with age. Instead of this film I "highly" recommend the one with Rosaland Russell, that film shows what is best about this character.What a shame the viewing public will never get to see Angela Lansbury as "Mame." Pefect for every Lucille Ball fan!
I love the music and the story is a classic. I'm a huge fan of Lucille Ball and Robert Preston. Though she was not 'blessed' with the best singing voice, I think it suits the character perfectly. It's a funny, sweet, romantic movie and I bought it because it's one of my favorites and I had not seen it for a long time. I suprised myself that I had not sought it out sooner. Since it is no longer made available through retail, I am glad I found a copy.I love the music and the story is a classic. I'm a huge fan of Lucille Ball and Robert Preston. I bought this movie for my mother-in-law. This is a movie that is hard to get ahold of. She loves it. The quality of the vhs is great. She was very pleased for her bithday.
