Jeanenne Bell is not quite as engaging and well organized as Warman's, but it has its strong points. The book begins with an overview of the "American and English Historical Period: 1840-1860." It is the story of queens, chatelaines, hairwork, Gutta-Percha and cameos. Then a "Price Guide" follows with black-and-white photos with estimated values. Color photos would have been more desirable, especially when the reader is looking at fine jewelry pieces with colored stones. There are sections in the book, which are in color. Then the book format changes and there are sections that cover Bakelite (with some nice color photos), costume jewelry and Mexican jewelry. The next part of the book covers "100 Years of Cameos" followed by a guide to identifying metals, everything from gold to German silver to Palladium. And finally, Bell offers some advice on recognizing real gems. The book also includes an illustrated alphabetical listing of jewelry makers and their marks. The whole thing weighs in at a hefty 557 pages. Since it's a good book, but not one of the very best, you can find this guide at a good price. I personally feel this book tries to do too many things inside one cover. But I still consult my copy on occasion.

This JEWELRY Book is a GEM Every COLLECTOR Should OWN
An ebayer recently asked me to recommend a book for vintage jewelry collecting. While I've accumulated a large amount of books, the only one I go back to repeatedly is this book by Bell. It's wonderful for MANY reasons, and I was captivated by this book from the first second that I opened it! It not only identifies the jewelry in each historical period, but it describes momentous events and lives of royalty, etc... You'll understand the reason behind jewelry trends. It's truly fascinating. It's especially useful for Victorian era jewelry, and there are a huge number of pictures. While most are in black and white, I didn't find this to be a hindrance at all. There's a section on jewelry hallmarks that's been invaluable, and there's an entire section dedicated to metals. And of course to Bakelite... You'll also find info on costume jewelry, and a section on Mexican jewelry. One of the most helpful areas of the book for me has been on circa dating clues, and this covers catches, materials, and motifs. This book is definitely the most comprehensive jewelry book I've ever found! One of the things I really love is that I keep learning every time I open this book. It's massive. In the past I always had a pile of books near me. Now this is normally the only resource I need. Maybe I can save someone a little money, because I don't even want to think of how much I spent on all these jewelry books!

Old Jewelry
This book has wonderful information on old jewelry, and the pictures were also very helpful in determining the value of my pieces. I have an extensive collection of old costume jewelry and I am always researching for any information I can use to describe my pieces that I sell in an Antique shop here in Houston...I am told, I have one of the largest collections of vintage costume jewelry in Texas. I always try to be honest in my descriptions so my customers are well informed about the pieces they have purchased from me. It keeps them coming back for more...This is for by one of the best reference books I have read...Jackie GarciaThis book has wonderful information on old jewelry, and the pictures were also very helpful in determining the value of my pieces.
