Overall, this is a good little PDA. I had mine for about a year before moving on to a better one. On the plus side, the screen is bright, and can be viewed outside. The flip up protector, while sometimes annoying, really helps shade the screen. The form factor is nice and small, and it rests easily in your palm, unlike some of the more bulky, squarish units. But the screen has a little gap between it and the unit itself, allowing dust to build up in between. This results in a fine layer of fuzz that must be taken care of every so often. As a result, the rubber liner starts to wear off, from being taken off and put back on over and over. Also, if you have these guys on for an extended amount of time, say to listen to music, they overheat, and must be hard reset. That means losing all yoru data until you re-sync. Those might sound like big problems, and maybe they are to you, but to me they were minor annoyances. The PDA functioned very well, the buttons all seemed to be in the right spot, and it was small enough to take with, wherever I went.Read full review
If you're looking for a Personal Digital Device (PDA) that suites your lifestyle than this is the one for you. But if you want something that is worth more...Now is a good time to reconsider on this PDA. The HP Jornada 540 Series was good during its time. One of the early ones to incorporate a larger memory (from 520 Series). Sure it does keep your agenda, phone numbers, and important documents. However other than that this machine lacks a lot. MP3 Player? Well it does come with a crummy Media Player. You have to actually download Windows Media Player 7.0 for this machine because it didn't with it. Playback is horrible on the Jornada. Games? Well only works with Hitachi SH-(3) Processor and this unit doesn't have a lot to give. Connection? Can sync with other hand held devices. Wireless CF card can connect this device but again this machine is slow.. If you're looking for just a ordinary PDA, Jornada 540 series is good enough. However if you want a more modern device, there are other choices out there. As a owner of a HP Jornada I felt left out that this device cannot be upgraded or even update to a modern Windows CE Operating System. I felt that this device needs to rest in peace like the other PDAs. Well other than that maybe others can enjoy the Jornada. Bottom Line, you want to use this for note taking and agenda keeping. GOOD! for multimedia .. NOT GOOD! -PeterRead full review
The Jornada 547 is my PDA of choice that I take with me wherever I go. One of the best qualities of this PocketPC is that it fits nicely in one hand. I also appreciate its simplicity. An older PocketPC, with only 32mb of RAM - but a goodie because you can access your programs very quickly - the buttons on the front of the device can get you your desktop, your contacts, your appointments and your tasks - at a single touch. It is pre-loaded with Windows media player and Microsoft Reader for .lit ebooks. The Jornada 547 plays MP3s easily with the media player and it has a nice sound. The screen is indoor/outdoor adjustable. And the unit has a compact flash slot. I have a 512mb CF card in the slot and it is enough for all the programs I wish to have. I keep the Internet/WiFi related programs on the RAM in the device and the rest of the programs on the card. So when I do wifi, I have plenty of memory to run the Netfront browser which the older 3.0 sh3 version works great on the Jornada 547. The Jornada 547 does have an sh3 cpu and therefore it does mean scouting around for the software - and some of the latest software will not work on this pda. But if you are looking for the basics of PIM/Doc-Ebook viewing/MP3 playing/WiFi then this PocketPC is great for everyday use. And an additional plus is that the lithium-ion batteries are relatively cheap. (However, about the worst thing that can be said about the Jornada 547 is that getting the very small screws out of the back cover of the unit, in order to replace the battery, is a tough job- unless you have the right kind of screwdriver designed for this task).Read full review
For the price, you can't beat what this older model PDA can do. Make sure to buy a memory card with it though.
I've had this PDA for over 4 years and it has never let me down, replaced the battery twice due to above average usage and that's it. Great product.
