Synopsis
Investigator Arkady Renko, the pariah of the Moscow prosecutor's office, has been assigned the thankless job of investigating a new phenomenon: late-night subway riders report seeing the ghost of Joseph Stalin on the platform of the Chistye Prudy Metro station. The illusion seems part political hocus-pocus and also part wishful thinking, for among many Russians Stalin is again popular; the bloody dictator can boast a two-to-one approval rating. Decidedly better than that of Renko, whose lover, Eva, has left him for Detective Nikolai Isakov, a charismatic veteran of the civil war in Chechnya, a hero of the far right and, Renko suspects, a killer for hire. The cases entwine, and Renko's quests become a personal inquiry fueled by jealousy. The investigation leads to the fields of Tver outside of Moscow, where once a million soldiers fought. There, amidst the detritus, Renko must confront the ghost of his own father, a favorite general of Stalin's. In these barren fields, patriots and shady entrepreneurs -- the Red Diggers and Black Diggers -- collect the bones, weapons and personal effects of slain World War II soldiers, and find that even among the dead there are surprises., Gorky Park's Detective Arkady Renko returns to his Moscow base in Martin Cruz Smith's latest entry in the internationally bestselling series about Russian crimes, broken hearts, and the mysteries of the soul.

Great experice with this seller! I love my new Julie Albright doll. This doll arrived quickly and in excellent condition. Her hair was wrapped in a protective hair net and she was well packaged for transportation. The box also arroved in excellent condition. The doll arrived exactly as pictured/described. The seller was also willing to work with the price. They also had a very fast response time. I love that the doll came with two books. I would purchase from this seller again.

Excellent eBayer. The refrigerator wheels I ordered were shipped immediately. When they arrived a few days later they came neatly and securely packaged, as described, with a personalized message and a piece of hard candy in the box. Next level service. Unexpected but welcome. Now I've got a level fridge with the correct OEM parts to get it done.

  • Intriguing, and entertaining fictional drama.

Martin Cruz Smith is an excellent author, who introduces many facets, and scenarios in the course of a novel, to bring it all full circle in the end.

  • A good read if you're an Arkady fan.

This one isn't as great as some of the earlier Arkady Renko stories because it's a bit heavy on the personality conflicts at the beginning. Lots of tension. Once Arkady gets away from Moscow, tho', things start hopping and you easily get transported away. The flashbacks occasionally get in the way of what's happening in the here and now, but are helpful in rounding out the man that Arkady has become. Fascinating. And as usual, you just can't keep a good man down!

  • Don't waste your money!

    Rather boring

  • Who is buried in the stand of trees?

Vintage Arkady Renko. Multiple stories as usual. Lots of local Russian color, customs and foibles. Not a big ending. Whatever you wanted to get from Stalin, you got something else. A satisfying read, deeper than it appears.
