Great Writing and Interesting Subject
I first read Daniel James Brown's Boys In The Boat for a book club. It wasn't a book I would have choose on my own. I loved it, so I decided to read The Indifferent Stars Above, also by him. I enjoyed this book so much that next on my list is his 3rd book. I knew the Donner Party was a group of wagon travelers that got stuck in the snow and resorted to cannibalism, but not any details. The author centered this book on one character in particular, so we did get more background on her and her family, but I think he was detailed with all people involved. The research into the politics and society at the time was interesting and pertinent to the story, but not overwhelming. I have young children, so I would have liked more details on the struggle to keep children alive, but I think that ... I first read Daniel James Brown's Boys In The Boat for a book club. The focus character was not a mom, so this wasn't the center of the novel. This book reads much more like a fiction tale than a stuffy non-fiction tale, and I did have problems putting it down. Not knowing enough details, I really did want to see who lived and died. After reading, I did go back and reread almost half the novel again, in parts, so I think if you know the outcome, you'd still enjoy.
