I bought this for my husband as a gift. He loves to read and thought this would be a great gift for Summer travelling. What sold him on the Kindle was the Whispernet Technology that would allow him to browse for and buy books virtually anywhere you can get Sprint cell phone coverage. We live in an area that supposedly gets awesome reception - orange area. The device would show full bars, just like a cell phone, but could never get and maintain a connection. If he tried to download a book it would hang up for several minutes and then say the connection was lost. Twice he called Kindle support. He was told to go outside, go to a different location, or just download books off his computer with the provided USB Port. He tried moving to different locations but downloading books from his computer defeated his reason for getting the Kindle in the first place. So it went back to Amazon. I am giving the Kindle 3 stars because as a eBook reader it is nice. It does need some redesign in the "Next Page" and "Back" buttons as they are very easy to press when you don't mean to. If you are perfectly fine with downloading your books from your computer then you will probably love the Kindle. If, however, you would like to take it with you on business or pleasure trips and don't have your computer you may not be able to download any books, newspapers, magazines or blogs. I think Wi-Fi technology would work better with the Kindle. There are more and more hotspots available now. Even in McDonalds. And most hotels and airports also offer Wi-Fi making it great for travel. So until that aspect is improved upon he will continue to read books the old fashioned way or use his iPod Touch for audio books.Read full review
I wanted to get a used Kindle on Ebay because I wasn't conviced that I would "take to" a different reading experience, and I didn't want to spend all kinds of money only to find that I missed a traditional book. Well, it did feel a little odd for about the first 10 minutes, but now I am hooked. I figured out the way of holding it that works for me (cover folded back, holding with my left hand), and I realized some things. 1) Kindle is very light, much lighter than a typical book of it's size. 2) The e-ink is spectacular, absolutely crystal clear and sharp. I even found myself running my hands over the screen, because it looks so dimensional. It is super-easy to read in all kinds of light, including bright sun 3) The greatest thing: I can snuggle into the couch - get into the perfect position, all folded up, and I do not have to move or shift in order to turn the pages! It seems like a small thing, but it's the BEST! All I need to do is tap the page turn button with a single finger on the one hand that holds the book. It really is so nice. I even still have a free hand to hold/drink my tea as I read. Frankly, after only a month, I have now lost the ability to read a normal book. I recently found myself attempting to click the page turn button on an ordinary (now, sub-par) paperback. Other characteristics - battery life is excellent, and browsing/shoping for new titles is a breeze. I am not altogether sure how the wireless works, but I simply turned it on, and I was able to connect, so that was simple, too. In short, I love my Kindle, and I am sure it won't be the only one our household ever owns...we are now converts, and there will be no going back!Read full review
In my opinion, the Amazon Kindle E-Book Reader is the future of the reading industry. You can download books, newspapers, and magazines for a fraction of the cost of you would pay to physically buy them. Just like you download ring tones on your cell phone, you can download a book from the Amazon Kindle Store. It is so easy---any person of any age can do this! It is about the size of a paperback book, so you can slip it in your purse, backpack, or briefcase, and read anywhere! It is so very easy to use, you only need to know the basics to get started reading. Buy a Kindle, save a few trees! Running out of shelf space--the Kindle is the answer. It holds over 200 books, etc., and uses a memory card to store countless more. I am so pleased with my Kindle, and I would highly recommend it to other readers.Read full review
I'd had a tough time deciding between a Kindle and a Nook, but I'm happy with the Kindle 2 we bought second-hand through Ebay. The previous owner had taken great care of it, and it was almost in mint condition. I like the size and lightness. It is only black & white, not color like the new Nook, but the display is excellent at showing detail in pictures. For children's books, color might be important, but I don't think it is for books most adults read. There are many free books available for Kindle, and I have taken advantage of some of those. I have the 3G version of Kindle 2, and in my location (which is rural), Whispernet delivery of books works quickly and easily. On this Kindle, you can also do some basic Web surfing, which means I can check my email on the road without having to pay the megabucks for a wireless aircard, and I can read it on a larger screen than my cell phone's. I have uploaded Mp3 music to my Kindle for music to read by. I was surprised at how good the music sounds! It took me a while to learn the controls for my Kindle, since I'd never used an e-reader before, but it wasn't that hard to learn (and I'm a Baby Boomer.) Speaking of being a Boomer, another thing I like about my Kindle is that I can adjust the font size of whatever I'm reading so that I can read with or without glasses. I downloaded a couple of word games on my Kindle, and they've been a lot of fun. My Kindle is an excellent multitasker. If I have it with me, I can keep myself in touch and entertained whenever I have unexpected downtime. I can have music, my choice of reading material, I can play games or Web surf. Heck, I even take it to church with me, since I have the Bible on it! I don't leave home without my Kindle. Can you tell I love this gadget?Read full review
I recently purchased a Kindle 3rd Generation and instantly fell in love with it. I decided that a Kindle would make a great Christmas present, but the $150 for a brand new one is a little steep for Christmas. I decided to test my luck and purchase a cheaper 1st generation. Although the device isn't as fast or as easy to use as the 3rd Gen. version, it is still an excellent E-reader. If you enjoy reading, then E-ink is the type of display you want. Don't waste your time with any LCD type E-readers. LCD displays are great for tablet PCs, but E-ink is what you want if you're a reader. You know how your eyes feel after staring at a computer monitor for a couple hours? That's how your eyes will feel every time you get done reading on an LCD type E-reader. Anyways, I would certainly purchase another Kindle, any generation.Read full review
I have used my 1st G Kindle for nearly three years and have loved it! When I first started using this device, I caught myself trying to turn the page - their ink simulation does seem so much like reading a real book. The Whispernet wireless delivery has worked great for me - it only takes seconds to download new media. The memory capacity has been awesome, I've downloaded dozens of books and never had to delete any or use the SD slot for memory expansion. Plus, you can also email or connect via cable to the computer to transfer MP3s, files, or other e-books. This is a great device to purchase if you travel, don't want to carry multiple books with you, want to enjoy reading convenience, don't want other people to see what you're reading (!), want to save a some money, as an entry point into the e-Reader world. Consider buying a used 1st Generation Kindle as a 2nd/3rd etc family device, as Amazon allows more than one device to interact with the same account, therefore being able to share purchased content.Read full review
I bought this device, because I wanted to get a Kindle, but didn't want to pay 70 - 120 dollars for one of the newer generations. I was a bit nervous about buying it, due to it being the first generation of the Kindle line. I was worried that it would be significantly dated compared to the later models. However, I find myself pleasantly surprised with my experience with the device. It isn't too slow compared to the other Kindles. I would estimate that the page turns are about a second compared to the other models which I would estimate at about half a second. The weight of this model is more than the other Kindles, especially the Kindle 4 - but it is not heavy enough to strain your wrist if you hold it one handed. In fact, I find the heavier weight more comfortable as it makes the device feel more solid, and not so flimsy. I would recommend this device to anyone wanting a solid ereader at a reasonable price. Overall, I would rate the device as 4/5.Read full review
I am a library loving voracious reader who has been thinking about whether a Kindle is right for me. When I travel each month I find I finish the books before I get home so I thought this might be a way to have several books on hand in a convienent travel size. But being frugal (cheap) I don't buy books. Amazon has a list of classic books available at no charge as well as fairly inexpensive newer books for downloading. The newest version of Kindle was being promoted in August but thought maybe a used one would be a good starting point for me. After reading some reviews it seemed the 1st edition was a reliable electronic so I started skimming eBay for one. So far I have been pleased with the ease of operation, downloading and reading resolution. The Kindle is a travel veteran that is easy to pack, holds a long battery charge and affords me flexibility in choosing what to read.Read full review
I have books stacked all over and was looking for an additional bookcase. This Kindle is highly space saving. (I've probably got 70 titles on it now.) I cannot get many titles for it that I would prefer; still I am using it daily and finding titles of interest. I feel that at the time of purchase I saved a few dollars buying it on eBay. I chose Kindle over other devices due to its rating with Consumer Reports. I've had it about a month and I'm still learning to use all of its features. Straight forward reading is easy. - Good product ! ! !
I absolutely love this Kindle. It is my first personal experience with an E-reader. I wasn't exactly certain of which Kindle I should purchase so I did a lot of research. It offered a lot of features that I didn't think were offered at that time of production, which was a plus however, when I read that it was the only Kindle with an SD Card I was sold. I am not an avid reader but I have found myself reading more now. The fact that I can load a variety of books, articles, etc. and just carry it with me is wonderful. I do not have to sit and wonder what to take with me when I am going somewhere and know I will have down time and the opportunity to read. Not to mention not having to carry all the items. They are right there in my little machine. I have not gotten to everything it is capable of yet, but cant wait to keep playing and experimenting. I know some day I will want a newer model, but for now I am happy with my purchase. It was an excellent price on Ebay and the condition is Mint. It came with everything including the original box. Whether you read a lot or a little and don't need to surf the web and watch movies I would highly recommend this version for starters.Read full review
