It took me two tries to find a set that works well. The series is preserved on DVD but it has not been remastered and the quality is really no better than broadcast. Get it if you want to own the series but don't expect fireworks.

When the show first aired I watched every episode. It gets you hooked early on with a complex story and compelling characters. I was very disappointed when the show wasn't continued after the first season but like most of the shows I like it didn't hit a cord with the mainstream. It's a very good sci-fi show which shows how people are trying to survive on a new world on which they are the alien life and trying to adapt to a completely new way of life. The way they created the native inhabitants was also very unique and I applaud the creators creativity. They basically thought about what humanity may have been if instead of turning to artifice they instead turned to organic technology and bonding with the planet. I bought it because they don't show it on tv anymore and you can't find it anywhere on hulu or similar sites for watching older tv shows. I wanted to watch it whenever I wanted to because it's one of my favorite shows.Read full review
I rented this series. Some of the show were great but many were just silly. People were not use to dealing with live animals other than cats. Also there were suppose to be the first human on the planet. It becomes obivous that is not true. The natives didn't talk but would appear in dreams. The natives live in harmony with the land. They will probably have problems with a large number of humans arriving and taking over the planet. Most of the colonists have only lived in space colonies since most of Earth has been destroyed by the human race. I missed this show when it was first on television. I think they could have improved it in the second season. There definitely worst shows on the air waves.
Earth 2 is about a group of people escaping the government of earth to save the lives of a number of children with a disease. For some reason the government trys several attempts to sabotage the mission & kill the group, but they escape and travel about 24 years to an earth like planet(hence the name earth 2)where the "scout team" is to build a colony for the rest of the group to live when they arrive.Sabotage causes everyone to use escape pods and the whole group gets seperated as well as the supplies & equipment.they meet strange creatures and have a long and uneasy road to travel before the rest arrive. The story it self isn't original..."traveling to find another earth",but they have characters that you like....and hate. The biggest problem with the show i have is in the 1st episode the special fx are good...but then nothing. The entire time on the planet they just walk every where and i think it was just a cheap way to put together a show.i rated the show as average though i do like it,it's just a second tier sci-fi show.If you like sci-fi you might like this...if you don't like sci-fi then you shouldn't bother.Read full review
In this heavily enviornmenatlist short lived Sci-Fi series the political unrest of an enviornmentally battered earth travelS light years to the promiase of a new planet AND THE HOPE OF a fresh start. Under the leadership of Devon the female lead role the balance of metherhood and leader lay heavily, with a cast of mismatched characters each with a past a seamingly group of unfit human manage to create a community with hope tolerance and the understanding that old human struggles will be part of the new human experience. You are left with sadness and awe when thew series ends its like reading harry potter and it ending forever in the middle of the first book, the characters become more believable as the plot thickens and the planet requires sacrifice and compromise all clear metaphors of our current challenges with the health of our enviornment. Sure hope a network picks this up and Earth3 launches in the future.....I'll have my dvr waiting. Alex De JesusRead full review
I personally hate science-fiction series for their silly FX, artificial plot and no real meaning hidden (it's just my oponion on what I've seen). There are a lot of series like that, made only for s-f maniacs. Earth 2 is so different.I wouldn't call it a s-f series. That it is not. So many themes are presented in it, starting from s-f vision of the future, esoteric bonds between humans and nature, links to historical expeditions on Earth, gender roles, ecology, war, crime, etc. And each and every character has his or her own depth, own story. Too bad the series did not get another chance in the 2nd season (they wanted more money for FX, but NBC/Universal didn't agree). It's been 15 years now and I still enjoy watching E2. Gladly, Avater waited a couple of years until the world was ready for that kind of movies. I find many similar themes in E2 and Avatar.Read full review

I wanted to see the episode with Tim Curry in it. Unfortunately I had to buy the entire series. It was worth it.

Earthy, unique and of course my favorite genre of science-fiction.With that said, what is not to love about this show of mixed-personalities teaming together to survive the unknown and the unforeseen.Kind of like a sci-fi western meets Robinson Crusoe. The only thing I disliked about the show was the acting of the "Noxzema Girl" and the fact that NBC cancelled it and compare this with another great show Firefly(Serenity)by genius Joss Whedon, which coincidentily also only ran for 1 season and was axed. That is my 2 cents worth. But I highly recommend this short-lived series!
