      The gasket isn't the problem

This is a great replacement gasket, but the gasket isn't the problem. The reason the gasket leaks is because most people over tighten the valve cover and distort the mating surface causing uneven seating and eventually, an oil leak. The fact that the muffler is directly below the valve cover causes the gasket to become hot and brittle as well. Using a good quality gasket sealer such as Permatex High Temp will help keep a good seal when replacing the gasket.

OEM gasket does the job but not necessarily the best option.

This is the OEM cork gasket for Cub Cadet lawn tractor and other Kohler small engines. As such it does it's job but likely to fail in a few years same as the original. Permatex type gasket maker may be a more reliable replacement. I learned this after my purchase and used a small layer Permatex with the cork gasket - overly-tightened bolts at original install may have warped the aluminum valve cover and prevent a good seal for the replacement.

    • Torque to 65 inch pounds? I say 25 inch pounds is enough.

This gasket calls for 65 inch pounds of torque when installed. I only used 25 inch pounds as it was already compressing the gasket. The old gasket was leaking, and had been torqued down so hard the gasket was only as thick as a piece of cardboard. I've had best luck installing gaskets dry. Not using any sealant. My engine shows no oil film after using this method. Installing without without using an inch/pound torque wrench is NOT a good idea. Some auto parts stores will loan you one.

    • Perfect replacement

I work on outdoor equipment, and see these Kohler engines with leaking valve cover gaskets pretty often. For whatever reason, they just loose their ability to seal. Tightening does not help. It's easy to replace.

    • Direct Replacement

This is a common problem with the Kohler engine where it tends to leak from the valve cover gasket. This gasket is a direct replacement and is easy to install. I’ve pretty much accepted that I have to change it every season otherwise the engine will develop a substantial leak. Hoping Kohler will develop a final fix..
