In der vorliegenden Untersuchung wird erstmals eine regionale und chronologische Ordnung der in Syrien und Nordmesopotamien von etwa 1800-1730 v. Chr. beheimateten Rollsiegel erstellt. Die Vorgehensweise ist neu: Sie wird einerseits anhand von datierten und z.T. erst kurzlich ausgegrabenen Siegeln vollzogen, andererseits auf dem Hintergrund der politischen Struktur sowie der historischen Prozesse der Zeit, die einen Neubeginn und Hoehepunkt in der Geschichte des Gebietes darstellt. Daraus ergeben sich regionale Siegelgruppen, die in etwa mit den sich damals konsolidierenden Regionalstaaten ubereinstimmen. In jedem Zentrum lasst sich die Herausbildung einer offiziellen Ikonographie fur die Siegel der hoefischen Elite beobachten. An den Siegelgruppen lassen sich auch immanente Entwicklungen, Fremdeinflusse und wechselseitige Beziehungen ablesen. Durch die Lokalisierung bestimmter Themenkreise und Motive kann die Identifizierung von Goettern und anderen Figuren vorgenommen werden.
