Hayward Strainer Basket Cover & Gasket Assembly

I'll get right to the only thing I don't like about this otherwise top of the line product: It is very difficult to turn the cover loose when you want to get it off to vacate air in the strainer or cleaning debris out of it. I am a retired engineer and have knowledge of and respect for proper lubrication. I have a supply of "water lube" and have used it generously on my Hayward strainer covers. I have even used the grease on my finger to wipe the inner surface of the top of the strainer where the cover seal makes contact, and reapplied it to the O ring. The cover goes on and off nice and easy after grease is applied, or has been forcibly removed and put back on, but after a day or two or three with the pump running, cover ON, that lid requires a lot of force to get turning again. I ...

    Cheap knockoff

This is a cheaper, thinner, clear plastic knockoff of the original Hayward I had. The original cover looks like the picture... tinted and thick heavy duty plastic, not what I received. The picture is why I ordered it, thinking that is what I would receive. One of the locking tabs broke the very first time I went to remove it. The ONLY good thing about this is it would work if you never, ever needed to actually use it for what it is for, and permanently left it on the pump. It sealed the hole... for one day.

  • Caution when removing cover!

As a follow on by a previous reviewer, I bought this high quality and rugged OEM replacement because when I last removed the previous cover, one of the two plastic lips broke as I removed the cover for cleaning. I can't remove the cover by hand when cleaning and use a long screwdriver inserted under the handle to provide leverage. Even with the recommended lubrication, there is so much friction caused by suction that the lid moves slowly and takes some effort to twist to remove. I take it the old one broke because of age and "plastic fatigue" (if there is such a thing). I'll be cautious with this new one and hope this advice helps someone.

  • High Quality

I was having trouble getting a prime on my water feature pump and was quoted a $89 service charge to show up to diagnose. They said that they probably would need to replace the pump for hundreds of dollars. I guess was that the suction side was getting air because it would start strong but not really get a good prime. My old pump strainer cover seemed like it might be the culprit and I decided to try a new one with new o-ring. This one arrived as promised and is good quality OEM. I applied some silicone to the o-ring and everything worked perfectly.

  • Very strong cover.

It's just what I needed to replace my old one, to fix a leak at the cover. It has been working fine ever since I installed it. A lightweight product with heavyweight features. I know it will last a long time.
