The Three Stooges Collection from 1955 to 1959 is a mixed bag-there are plenty of laughs, but it just seems that the old charm (or whatever it was) had disappeared somewhere along the way. Perhaps the sadness of Shemp Howard's death in Nov. 1955 is a part of the stigma that these shorts suffered-at least the ones made after his demise. Shemp was a great replacement for Curly Howard, his and Moe's younger brother. The Stooges still had plenty of panache, and even drastic budget cutbacks by Columbia Studios didn't diminish Moe, Larry and Shemp's comedy genius. After Shemp's death, the studio began recycling more old footage (and script ideas) using a stand-in for Shemp when newer scenes were needed (you never see the stand-in's face). Then, in 1957, Joe Besser was chosen as the 3rd Stooge. Joe was a funny comedian and a fine man, who did his best to keep the Stooge act going, but was never as popular as Curly or Shemp. In all fairness, the timing of Joe's entry into the act was quite bad-Columbia's short subject unit wasn't doing well financially, so the budget got smaller and the scripts, cornier. Several older shorts were remade with Joe ("Guns A-Poppin'" and "Sappy Bull Fighters" are prime examples) that just didn't click, if you had seen the original shorts. Sixteen episodes were made with Joe Besser when the end came in 1958, the year Columbia shut down the short subject division. The late '50's saw a revival of popularity for the Stooges when local TV stations began airing the Stooge films mostly in the afternoon-when school was out. The boys became so well-loved that Moe, Larry, and a new kid named "Curly Joe" DeRita began making motion pictures, such as "Snow White and the Three Stooges" and "The Outlaws Is Coming". Although it was good to see the boys in the saddle again, their movies were never very well-received. The beloved trio had seen their best years come and go; but in the process they had made millions of fans-me included! I believe the world will never again see a comedy team of the stature of Moe, Larry, Curly, Shemp, and Joe. Thanks for the laughs, boys!Read full review
