Throughout, Holden dissects the 'phony' aspects of society, and the 'phonies' themselves- the headmaster whose affability depends on the wealth of the parents, his roommate who scores with girls using sickly-sweet affection.Lazy in style, full of slang and swear words, it's a novel whose interest and appeal comes from its observations rather than its plot intrigues (in conventional terms, there is hardly any plot at all).     A coming of age classic.

    It's a coming of age classic of American lierature. I last read it like sixty some odd years ago. Back when I was in eighth grade. I was curious for a revisit. A bit dated now but that is to be expected. In some ways more of a classic than it ever was. In other ways not. I had the feeling reading it this time that it won't have that consideration all that much longer. Sort of a pity!
