Totally Not What I Was Expecting
I had heard a lot about this DVD and was expecting something incredible and I must say, I was let down. None of the stories had any kind of story, nor did they come to any resolutions by story's end. It was more like random scenes in black urban locations and dialog that made no connections to anything in particular. I'd never heard of Charles Burnett before this and probably won't after.

Not about mainstream entertainment.... prelude to transcendence
Killer of Sheep isn't about nothing unlike tv shows like Sienfeld. Rather, Killer of Sheep captures the carved out moments of working class American life during the early 1970s. Charles Burnett's film noir is poetically moving and its richly filled with visuals flow from one scene to another in what seems to be an effortless transition of story telling that incredibly moving. Stories of coming of age, marriage, survival, life lessons all woven into a cinematic tapestry that is on the level of Exterminating Angel by Luis Buñuel, Rashaman by Akira Kurasawa and Daughters of the Dust by Julie Dash. This is a movie about nothing. Absolutely nothing.
And I don't mean it in a good way, like the "Seinfeld" t.v. show was about nothing. I will watch my share of independent movies. I researched the reviews, and the clear majority were very positive. The critics must have been smoking something. I gave this movie 35 minutes and still couldn't figure out what it was about. Don't waste your time watching this amateur film. As "Seinfeld" said, you don't get that time back.And I don't mean it in a good way, like the "Seinfeld" t.v. show was about nothing. I will watch my share of independent movies.
