This is Sarah's most mainstream, pop-sounding album to date. She plays banjo on only one song, the haunting "Lost Dog." Her friend Sara Wadkins plays fiddle on one song. Even these two songs are very different from the alt-bluegrass sound that Sarah was known for in her earlier work. It is a stripped-down, singer-songwriter album, more melancholy than upbeat. As on her previous album, there is some electric guitar added to the mix, with Jedd Hughes again contributing in this vein(as well as accompanying Sarah on her current tour). Sarah wrote or co-wrote all the songs, no covers. Four of the songs are just Sarah with a guitar, with no other instrumentation. All that being said, I love this album. Sometimes, when you listen to an album, you can tell that it is exactly the album the artist wanted to make. UNDERCURRENT sounds to me like a pure expression of Sarah's creative vision. As is usually the case with Sarah, the music is a cut above what you get from other artists in the same genre. I highly recommend this record to anyone who wants to hear this performer at the height of her creative potential. if there was any justice in the world, she would be more famous than Taylor Swift.Read full review
