Every woman deserves a prince but how about a DUKE instead??? this is THE best of the mini series and tv movies based on the Danielle Steel best Seller. Sarah Thompson (Annette O'Toole) begins with the marriage of her dreams but find he is an alcoholic when drunk is abusive. After the loss of her first child after he abuses her off to Europe on a grand tour with her very rich parents. In England she runs into a handsome rich quietly shy Duke (Anthony Andrews) who never told her he was royalty. His quiet pursuit of this shy sad lady who he falls hard and fast for is very good. We see him pursue her to Italy where after some efforts on his part.... he persuades her to marry him. The Duke of Whitefield is wonderfully played by Andrews who we like from the minute we see him. O'toole is excellent as woman who is sad and finds a second chance at love with her new Duke~. while on their honeymoon in France they come across an abandoned villa and Sarah has dreams of fixing it up. soon the Duke and Dutchess work hard to fix up their new home. But the war breaks out and the Duke in the reserve has to leave and go back to to England. Sarah had given birth and with her tiny son Phillip has to stay in France when the war breaks out. with the loss of a daughter to a fever , and years of separation from her duke we see her have a friendship with a Nazi who helps Sarah and her family survive the war. Finding her Duke who is injured and recovers. mean while the couple purchase JEWELS from the locals who need a fresh start in life and have hidden the jewels from the Nazis. so the Whitefield buys Jewels and starts a world wide Jewelry company. Typical Steel is the HORRIBLE brat son Phillip who only gets more vain and selfish as he grows up. Sleeps with his brothers slutty wife, YOungest wild child daughter is married to cheating italian who will not divorce her and helps to plot with Phillip to slip the family up~ very soap opera but this story rolls along at a good pace and keeps us entertained enough to see how Sarah ends up. I liked Annette O'Toole who did a nice job aging from a very young Sarah to a grandmother in this movie~ Phillip who is dislikable every step of the way~ and all her unlikeable children show what the Whitefield family is 'really' made of when push comes to shove. Romance great scenery they have those taky 1960's styles done pat in this one~ theme song won a Golden Globe Award. I give a solid 7 out of 10. you will want to watch the whole thing just to see how it ends. BEST of all the Steel movies~See also Changes and Palamino. if you found this rewiew helpful please remember to vote~Read full review
This movie ( based off a book) is about a young lady who goes to Europe and falls in love with a Duke who's 13th in line for the throne. They marry , buy a large estate in France , he goes to war, she has a baby , he comes back from the war. They help people who need money to survive so they buy their precious jewels and later they put all the jewels in stores they own. All the while they are raising their children who get in the family business as they become adults. There are troubles along the way as in any family but all works out for all. The movie is long but very good, I recommend it's great from start to finish.
