Once upon a time, [namely the 1960s]was a period of great creativity and freedom. The San Francisco bands emerged around 1966 after the British Invasion and many big acts thrived, although not sounding anything like each other. Unlike the Pop pablum distributed today, this was once universally considered to be A Good Thing. Along came Zappa and his Mothers of Invention and were absolutely revolutionary. This was a new rock music with many outside influences-everything from do-wop to Edgar Varese combined with outspoken and biting social commentary. Although the vocals and musicianship are not up to the virtuoso level of some of Zappas later groups, this one really paved the way for them [and others] to be as outrageous as their imagination would allow. If you are too young to know this material, it is hard to imagine how far backward the state of rock music has regressed. If you were there, as I was, no explanation will be needed. A musical and historical must-have, highly recommended. Mike B. electdrumsRead full review

This is where it all began. I was but a young lad laying in my psychedelic bedroom when my brother brought Freak Out home. Changed my life. It will change yours also.
