Absolutely, without a doubt, the BEST western ever made! Be weary of the earlier 2000 Artisan/ Hallmark full screen boxed set- Its TRASH! (The master looks like it was taken off of a VHS copy!) This RHI copy is the one to have. It’s remastered and widescreen and it’s great! And again, the best western ever made. With Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall you cant go wrong!

DIsc One has some type of background noise the first 35-37 minutes of the DVD. Have played on several different players but with the same results. We actually own the VHS version and that background noise is not on the same section as on the DVD. It is puzzling!

I'm from Texas originally and a fan of the prairie. In my opinion, this is still the best western on the market. Duval & Jones are endearing and convincing in their roles. Excellent story line and plenty of authenticity to appreciate. It won't flash as much as much of what's being made today, but it's really hard to beat Duval in this kind of role and the dialogue is peerless. A couple of examples: "Well we don't rent pigs and I figure it's better to say it right out front because a man that does like to rent pigs is... he's hard to stop." "Well the first man comes along that can read Latin is welcome to rob us, far as I'm concerned. I'd like a chance t' shoot at a educated man once in my life." Priceless! I STILL recommend it without reservation. If you want further enjoyment, The Return to Lonesome Dove is a decent film (though many actors are different) and Comanche Moon is worth your time. I'll bet a silver dollar Karl Urban and Steve Zahn studied Duval and Jones to play their younger roles and they do an excellent job.Read full review
I love a good western, and this movie fits the bill..I only wish it was longer..It has it all,and comes about as close to realism,as any western to date..the Unforgiven was another movie that is very believable. I also own all seasons ,,all 3 of them,,of Deadwood, now there is a true to life western, with the whores, the language, and killing for sport..nothing comes closer..On my list of the top 5 westerns..1 Deadwood,2 the outlaw Josey Wales,3 Lonesome dove,4 the Missouri Breaks,5 the Unforgiven..a close 5th,the Sacketts..I grew up watching Bonanza, the rifleman, and Matt Dillon ..then got caught up watching all of Clint Eastwood,Spaghetti westerns..not the best quality but better than most of the crap that Hollywood, was producing at the time..If you get a chance to watch Lonesome Dove,Get comfortable kick back, and enjoy..hope this helps,,DSRead full review
Such a good movie, makes other westerns seem lame! Of course, i am a huge Robert Duvall fan & always love him as a cowboy, seems to me to be his best roles. If you have time to spare, definitely watch this western. I'm sure many years from now, people will still like it.

I have loved the Lonesome Dove series since it first came out. The main characters Robert Duval and Tommy Lee Jones, Diane Lane, Anjelica Huston and many others are absolutely great. The story line is entertaining and engaging. I watch it every holiday, and I know it so well now that I can cook and have dinner with my family while it is playing in the background. One of the best movies I have ever owned.

This product was purchased because it is one of the all time favorites in the western category for us. It has a great story as well as historical value that follows the ideals of the men who formed the first Ranch in Montana. The actors are superb and well known, the photography and location settings are magnificent. This movie tells a wonderful story of people who despite the odds against them still pursued their dreams through hard work and sacrifice. It is a movie that is true to life with adversity and triumph of spirit and love and will always be an all time classic western. This movie is in four parts that take approximately six hours to watch so its best to start early and plan a relaxed evening with snacks and a cosy blanket.
This is the first one I watched and it was the best western I ever saw. I read a few of the reviews and saw them mention a few editing errors with extra people roaming around during the film that didn't belong there. Sure enough, the scene where Gus is leaving with the bar keeper has some folks wandering around in the backround, but that doesn't diminish the fact that the whole series was and is the best western ever. I bought them all. I just found Commanche Moon and watch that, its the second in the flim series, still excellent. Watch them all you will go crosseyed but they are all great.
Lonesome Dove would come on periodically and I would always try to record it for later viewing. this however has been going on for over 15 years or so. Eventually after recording it (and saving) one of the episodes would get deleted. Of course no one knew who or what happened. You have to understand that in my mind this is one of the all time classics. Gus McCray is an old crusty former Ranger. he plays the part fantastically. When I saw this on eBay for sale I knew I could I eliminate the mystery of deleted segments. Since I have the entire series (plus behind) on DVD I can and have watched it at my leisure. Lonesome Dove was one of televsion's great mini-series, but was created before widescreen HDTV televisions, and Dolby surround sound. This reissue solves both points, judiciously cropped from 4:3 to 16:9 format. Some may object that parts of the images are missing, but I felt that the cropping was professionally done and did not effect the power of the film. The 5.1 surround sound is an added bonus, adding enhanced realism. The color and sharpness of the transfer to DVD is excellent. So, saddle up to your home theater and enjoy a great western experience!
