Product Information

Alberto Lattuada's 1962 film was one of the first Italian films to deal head-on with the Mafia, albeit in the form of an incredibly smart black comedy. Nino (Alberto Sordi) is just an ordinary, unassuming auto-factory worker. That is, until he takes his wife (Norma Bengell) and two daughters to visit his relatives in Sicily. Far from the teeming streets of Milan, Nino hopes to get in touch with his family history. Unfortunately for him, he soon learns that his family tree is rotten to the core. Now everything he thought he knew about himself is about to change.

Best Version of the Best Mafia Movie Ever
This is probably one of the best Mafia movies ever. It is funny, surprising, and achingly sad. Decades before Godfather, this film shows aspects of organized crime reaching into lives an upwardly mobile supervisor class family. The surroundings of the film are powerful from the operation of an automobile plant, to a dusty town in Sicily, to a transatlantic fight in a crate to the mean streets of New York City. Don't miss this film. There are several DVD versions of this film, but the Criterion disk, as always, is far superior. Don't waste money on the rest. This version is not available on Amazon.

A Gem
Having traveled to Sicily many times to see family and knowing the continuous issue with the North & South, this "comedy" was perfectly done. Slows down near the end with the Mafia stuff but otherwise another Italian classic.
