Great value, easy to use and

I used it to digitise about 120 photographs (not negatives - it won't do negatives) taken 18-20 years ago of our 2nd home during renovation / redecoration etc. I used my MacBook Air and downloaded the Mac iOS software from the Canon website. The instruction manual is minimalist, to say the least, but I could follow it easily for basic set-up. There is a much fuller manual available online. From taking it out of the box, to first photo scanned took no more than 25 mins, if that. The photos had been taken with 33mm compact zoom film cameras c.2000 - 2002 so I was not expecting perfection. The scanner has produced very good quality editable jpegs of decent (but not great) quality photos. It was VERY easy to set up and is light and easy to use. I took 600 dpi resolution jpegs and each one ...

    • Lighter, faster, more features

Purchased as a replacement for an ailing ancient PackardBell badged BearPaw scanner. Amazed at how quickly this scans - even at full resolution (600dpi). Seems a lot lighter and much less sturdy than my old one so I suspect this will not still be working in 15-years. The supplied software seems to have a lot of useful features (OCR, "stitch" together multiple scans, scan multiple items at once, etc) but I have not tried them as yet. One niggle, why do scanners NEVER scan the full A4 - why is there ALWAYS a dead space at the the edges?

    • Quick Scanner

Bought this for scanning old motorcycle magazines. Absolutely perfect for this taking 8 seconds per page (set for document), comes with a Pdf editor so easy to sort each file at the end of a run. With editing & a quick check it is possible to scan 4 mags of 50 pages in 1 hour.

    • Nice scanner unless you run OSX 10.10. You’ll need to buy extra software.

Wanted to digitise years worth of magazines I have been hoarding so looked at some robust scanners which might withstand a heavy workload. However many models offer sophisticated operations which I don’t need so figured that the LiDE 400 was worth a punt since it’s priced so favourably. Out of the box it’s pretty light and slim and doesn’t look like it will withstand any mishandling but once it’s on a desk I suppose there is little that can damage it. One big plus for this scanner is that it is USB powered, no mains leads and transformers etc. However, if you intend to run it on a Mac with OSX 10.10 (Yosemite) be warned... it won’t. I spent a good few hours attempting to find drivers and work rounds to get this thing working without any luck. My solution was to purchase Vuescan for £60 ...

    • A scanner that doesn't live in vain

Worked straight out of the box with no fuss. It comes with a USB-A to USB-C cord, but I was able to connect it to my laptop with a USB-C to USB-C cable and save the adapter. The detachable stand meant it took up very little room on my desk, and the angle is such that paper doesn't slip off the platten before you can close the lid. I only intended to test it once I set it up, but wound up spending the next six hours reducing two bales of old paperwork to PDFs, which was made easier with the PDF start and stop buttons not featured on the LiDE 300. If you're not planning to do document scanning regularly, and desk space isn't an issue, you could save a few quid and buy the 300 model, but for my part I'm glad I spent the extra to have a s scanner that'll handle both photos and low level PDF ...
