A Great Investment
This book tells of a very obscure piece of history. It’s important to remember the “small” events that rarely made the headlines. The reality is that it’s stuff like this that makes history (assuming that it’s taught the right way)- very engrossing. It reminds me of a documentary on African American Deputy Marshall Bass Reeves- a hero that is, in my opinion; inexcusably overlooked. I applaud the author for bringing this piece of World War 2 history to the forefront. I will likely use this book as a reference for my own classroom teaching. Amazing episode at the end of WWII in Europe!
An American tank company commander with a handful of infantry soldiers worked with 2 SS officers and a dozen Waffen-SS soldiers to safeguard a group of French VIPs in a castle in the Tyrol section of Austria in the last few days of WWII.
