Reviews"A mysterious adventure that spotlights the horrific experiences of Native women whose abuse is often unseen and unreported." --Kirkus Reviews "Longmire, a Vietnam War vet, shrugs off some serious physical knocks, including falling into a canyon, on the way to a dramatic showdown with a killer and a bittersweet if hopeful ending. Fans will hope the sheriff has no plans to retire soon." --Publishers Weekly "Johnson uses crisp prose and sharp dialogue to create a sense of immediacy as the investigation moves toward its inevitable, thrilling conclusion." --Bookpage Praise for Craig Johnson "It's the scenery--and the big guy standing in front of the scenery--that keeps us coming back to Craig Johnson's lean and leathery mysteries." --The New York Times Book Review "Johnson's hero only gets better--both at solving cases and at hooking readers--with age." --Publishers Weekly "Like the greatest crime novelists, Johnson is a student of human nature. Walt Longmire is strong but fallible, a man whose devil-may-care stoicism masks a heightened sensitivity to the horrors he's witnessed." --Los Angeles Times "Johnson's trademarks [are] great characters, witty banter, serious sleuthing, and a love of Wyoming bigger than a stack of derelict cars." --The Boston Globe

  • The Thinking Man's Walt

The "Daughter of the Morning Star" and "the Next to Last Stand" reveal a more introspective side to Walt Longmire. Injuries sustained during his Mexico adventure and periods of blackouts contribute to a more reflective character. Added to these factors is the fact that Walt is aging. I find these last two novels more entertaining with less obligatory violence and more subdued physical encounters. I have to admit that as much as I love the Walt character, I do grow tired at times of his detailed descriptions of firearms and their capabilities and prolonged shootouts and "stuff" exploding. I am more interested in the details of the investigations and character development. I prefer the "thinking man's" Walt over the "ass kicking" Walt. The author continues to write first rate and believable dialogue and gives the reader accurate and picturesque descriptions of the Wyoming environs and weather. And as always, I love the author's insertion of arcane knowledge and historical tidbits into the narrative. "Daughter of the Morning Star" does not disappoint and also deals with important and timely topics concerning crimes against Native American women.

  • Last Longmire book leaves you wanting another one.

Last in the series of Longmire mysteries, has Sheriff Walt, Henry Standing Bear searching for a killer of a female Native American basketball star. The victim's sister, also a talented basketball player is also in danger. Well written and curious introduces readers to the tragic disappearances of young Native American women. Native legends, superstitions and notions of death are discussed and experienced by Longmire creatively. Wish there were more mystery books in the series. The book arrived in excellent condition. Thank you
