One of the best retro CPUs you can find
The AMD Athlon series for Slot A motherboards were the CPUs that really began to cement AMD's position in the market. They performed well and the yields were so good that they were able to ramp up clock speeds much better than Intel at the time. Back in the day, and AMD Athlon was both a better product and a better deal than Intel (at least until the Pentium 3 Copper mine came out). This CPU runs at 700 Mhz and has 128 Kb L1 cache and a large for the time 512 Kb L2 cache. So, why would you want this CPU today? Simple: vintage computer builds. As newer and newer operating systems come out, more and more old programs and games become incompatible. Why not build an old computer so you can enjoy all your old games and other programs which might still be useful for you? This cpu is an excellent performer for this type of situation. It will be very comfortable in a Windows 95/98/98se/ME/2000 machine or even in MS-DOS. At worst, it might be too fast for some very old DOS games and you might need to slow it down via disabling L1 or L2 cache. This CPU comes with a stock heatsink that does a very good job at keeping it cool, but the small, high RPM fans are a tad noisy. If you have a case with good sound dampening then you might not notice. Install of the cooler was easy to figure out and installing into the motherboard was easy too (just check your manual). I would suggest removing the old thermal paste from the cooler and adding in your own. It was a bit dry after so many years. One final reason to get this CPU is that there are still (at the time of this review) some new-in-box motherboards on ebay and elsewhere. You cannot beat that. Final thoughts: If you want to build an old machine or upgrade one, this is a very good buy. If you are just interested in computers at all this is a good showpiece. If you did not know, this is a "slot" style CPU. Very unusual to the modern viewer. I highly recommend it. I had this same CPU in my childhood computer and I now have a new one in a vintage DOS machine.
