First the good news. 1. These preamps sound great. 2. The AD converter sounds great. 3. The quality and features in this price range really can't be beat. I'm Very impressed. Now for the bad news. 1. When you turn the gain knob up it behaves normally until you get near the top of the range. There (up near the top of the gain range) it suddenly jumps a huge amount in volume. This is a problem when recording quiet sources or from low output microphones like the EV RE20 or Sure SM-7. It makes it impossible to make a minor change in recording levels in the middle of a take. Be aware of this before recording a vocal. 2. I suspect there is a design flaw in the AD converter. I bought an ASP880 and the AD converter stopped working after a couple months. I sent it in for warranty repair. I still had sessions to do in the meantime so I bought a second one. The second one now is starting to show signs of problems with the AD converter. It stops putting out any signal. I power cycle and it comes back. The same thing happened with the first one I bought before it stopped working completely. 3. I still haven't received the first unit back from the repair shop after four months. They're apparently having trouble getting replacement parts from China. After making a big stink online and contacting Audient directly and the repair shop again ( a fourth time), they're now offering to send me a brand new one. Finally. The point is, don't expect quick service if you need it. Bottom line - This unit has a huge bang for the buck in terms of sound quality for the price. Think of it like buying an excellent sounding 8 channel AD converter and getting 8 great sounding mic preamps for free. I just hope the thing keeps working.Read full review
