The Jefferson Nickel ( 5 cent) was first offered by the United Stated Mint in 1938 & they are still being offered as of today, totaling 84 years. From 1938 -1942, 1946 to date the 5 cent nickel alloy used .750 copper, .250 nickel. The mint made a change in the alloy in 1942 -1945 (wartime nickels) the alloy the mint used .560 copper, 350 silver, & .090 manganese, they were call the silver nickel. Also, there are two different proofs with different alloy for the year 1942. The mint has made many changes to the dies of the nickel over the years.
