This is the true story of a lynching that took place in the 1950s. It is told by the son of a Methodist minister in North Carolina whose best friend one day told him, "Papa and them got 'em a nigger." It is well-written and well-researched. I grew up in the South during the same time as the author, but this book helped me understand the racial situation during that time so much better. This is an important book.
I wanted to read the book because they are filming the movie in the city where I live and I wanted to know what the movie was going to be about. It is a really good story about the racial issues in the south at that time. I didn't know anything about this true story untill the filming started. I knew times were bad but not untill you read the book do you understand alot about things and how they were.

Easy to read and I learned lots I did not know about the Civil Rights Movement. I had been sold the tale that the movement was passive, which partly is true, however this book makes it clear that violence(rioting) was the clincher that made white people accept the Civil Rights of their fellow Americans of a darker shade.
