I have been playing professionally for over 58 years. I have used Fender, Boogie, Tone King and others so I can appreciate the virtues of each. The Katana 100 112 sounds wonderful right out of the box. It's powerful and very loud with a full, rich tone. The "Panel" setting uses the amp like any other with the typical controls. Boss Tone Lab enables the user to fully explore and program the amp to really bring out its potential. It was a little bit of a learning curve for me but I was able to really set up 4 presets that I would compare favorably with individual pedals on a pedal board. For those who like to tweak, this amp and Tone Lab really offer some great combinations. At this price point, I believe you can't beat this amp.

The three wattage settings make the BOSS Katana easy to switch from practice amp to small & medium size stage use with a turn of a knob that also makes it easy to put on standby without reaching around the back like most amps. While the controls are limited in relation to the amount of internal signal processing capability, attaching a laptop via USB facilitates programming of a wide variety of effects parameters (normally found on the knobs & switches of foot pedals) that are represented visually on your computer screen using BOSS Tone Studio app (available for download online). Pre-programmed effects setting patches are available online (at Tone Central) and can be downloaded and sent to the Katana all via the BOSS Tone Studio app. These patches make it easy to emulate the sound of various guitarists and songs. *The internal workings of the Katana, itself, are also upgradable as newer versions of the firmware are developed. You can save setting patches on your computer and load them into Katana's 8 available preset locations as needed. Once the effects parameters are loaded into the Katana from your computer, you're ready to rock. An attached foot switch (sold separately) can also be used to access the 8 presets & toggle the effects on & off, while EV5 or equivalent pedals can control the volume & assigned parameters, as well. While some control of effects is available via the knobs on the Katana, the amp is pretty dependent on a connected computer for you to gain full control of this technology driven amp. Those who struggle with using computers may find this intimidating, but it's quite empowering for the tech savvy user. When set to 100W, the amp is pretty loud for it's size and considering the added value of signal processing, which takes the place of a pedal rack of BOSS effects, this amp is a great value for the price. I played it on a stage with two other guitarists who had much larger amps and was surprised how the Katana cut through and held it's own. The model name is quite fitting.Read full review

After comparing this Boss amp to others, reading reviews, looking at pros and cons I decided to take a chance. Man, was I pleasantly surprised when I plugged in and tried it out!! While I am playing mostly on the "Clean" setting, I tried out the "Acoustic Setting" with my Taylor and it is superb. Still learning my way around with it, but so far it far surpassed my expectations.
