A Fan Oven element of appropriate quality and finish from Qualtex.
The purchase of this was a little bit of a gamble, as the Candy fan oven to which was to be fitted had lost its data label so it wasn't possible to identify the model and hence the correct part number. The element was identified purely by specifications, although that isn't really the way most spare parts suppliers databases are set up. Two previous Maddocks branded elements had been fitted to this oven, each of which had only lasted a couple of years against the original Candy part which had lasted at least 10 years prior to that. The first element had been bought over the counter from a local parts supplier, although I had a feeling that it wasn't actually an identical replacement but was probably the closest match they had on the shelf at that time, as they were rated at 2200W, when ... The purchase of this was a little bit of a gamble, as the Candy fan oven to which was to be fitted had lost its data label so it wasn't possible to identify the model and hence the correct part number. The element was identified purely by specifications, although that isn't really the way most spare parts suppliers databases are set up. Two previous Maddocks branded elements had been fitted to this oven, each of which had only lasted a couple of years against the original Candy part which had lasted at least 10 years prior to that. The first element had been bought over the counter from a local parts supplier, although I had a feeling that it wasn't actually an identical replacement but was probably the closest match they had on the shelf at that time, as they were rated at 2200W, when most of the Candy fan ovens seem to use a 2500W element. The second element was a straight replacement for the first based on part number. The OEM Candy elements are not always manufactured any more for ovens of this age, there are disclaimers on their parts queries that OEM-equivalents may be supplied, so you may still get a non-original Candy-branded aftermarket part anyway. The exact specifications were queried with LM Electrical and to be fair they responded promptly, but weren't able to provide any more data than that listed, however they were able to confirm that the element listed was a Qualtex ELE2015. This made it possible to cross-reference most of the specification elsewhere. One area of concern was the height of the terminals above the Plate, as although most elements seem to be between 25mm and 35mm, it appeared that there are elements whose terminals may project as much as 75mm. This is presumably for ovens which have insulation behind the element, which this Candy model didn't have. The rear cover of the oven wouldn't have given clearance to much over 35mm height, plus there would have been a risk of shorting out or arcing to the cover if the height was too high. Several other suppliers (where they quoted the terminal height) gave different dimensions for the terminal height against what appeared to be the similar part numbers, without specifying where this measurement was made to. It was pretty clear that some measured to the base of the terminals (i.e the actual end of the element), while others measured to the top of the terminals. a difference of perhaps 10mm! Without a drawing or dimensioned image of the part you are rather reliant on the supplier's listing correctly matching the oven manufacturers specifications for the element. A second area of concern was the spacing of the fixing screw holes on the Plate; some suppliers listed 55mm centre to centre, others 56mm. Candy ovens appear to favour 56mm centres, presumably other oven manufacturers use 55mm centres. The part arrived on schedule and did turn out to be the correct dimensions, with 56mm centre to centre fixing holes and an appropriate terminal height. The only minor niggle was the diameter of the holes in the Fixing Plate were both less than 4mm, possibly due to the electroplating applied to the Fixing Plate, so a drill had to be run through them to open their diameter up slightly. I could have risked running the 4mm self-tapping screws throught the holes as supplied, but I didn't want to risk shaving their diameter down, as they weren't a terribly good fit into the sheet metal and had been removed and replaced several times. Self-tapping screws of 3.5mm size would have fitted without problem. If the centres had been required at 55mm then a bit more fettling would have been required to get the element to fit. The bracket for supporting the free end of the element wasn't quite in the right place for this particular oven and was crimped nicely tight to the three turns of the element. It was possible to gently tap the bracket around the curve of the element without damaging the surface of the element beyond a couple of light scratches, but this wan't a one-man job. The bracket on the failed Maddocks element also hadn't lined up and it looked like it had been left loose, which may have led to its short life as rattling had been reported when using the the oven fan. Overall, for the price, the Qualtex element appears to be of appropriate quality and finish, so could be expected to give a suitable service life. One point in its favour compared to the two prior Maddocks parts is that it does have its part number stamped into the Fixing Plate, which the Maddocks units didn't have.
