The housecoat (robe) became a popular item in middle and upper-class homes across the world in the 1940s. It first hit the cover of Vogue magazine in 1933 but wouldn't catch fire until later in the decade. In those days, they were full-length, elegant, and tailored to create a look you won't find today.

About fleece
The best thing about fleece is its ability to effectively trap and retain body heat. For robes, it’s comfortable and warm, and there are four types you’ll likely come across when you’re shopping online:
- Microfleece: Microfleece is generally defined as any fleece with a weight of less than 200gsm. It is the thinnest and lightest type of fleece available, and it is more often worn as a base layer.
- Mid-weight fleece: Mid-weight fleece is any fleece weighing between 200gsm and 300gsm. It is significantly warmer than lightweight fleece and has stronger insulating characteristics. It is also more comfortable and breathable than other types.
- Heavyweight fleece: Heavyweight fleece is the most luxurious of all fleece weights, weighing 300gsm or more. It is best used as a thermal fleece, suited for extremely cold weather. It is the least flexible fleece, but the warmest and most insulating.
- Textured fleece: in the same weight range as heavyweight fleece, but it has a patterned outer layer that is more noticeable. Textured fleece tends to be softer to touch and more comfortable than standard fleece.
