I was looking for a scanner because I already had a quite good printer and I didn't like the idea to get one of those "all in one' thing. They just didn't fit to my requirements - they're either much more expensive than a simple couple "printer-scanner" or if they're cheap enough they cannot work without color ink, which is important to me. Or the ink itself is too expensive. So I gave up to find appropriate replacement and decided to get this scanner and add it to my home office. Well, I get this one (used) for like $45 including shipping and it works very good. I don't regret for the purchase. Quality of scanning is very high. And it has capacity to scan films and translate them into digital format. Well, the pictures from the films don't look like perfect ones, but maybe that's because my films are too old, I'm not sure. But nevertheless it did its job and all my old pictures are in the computer now. The scanner is simple to operate, software seems to be solid and easy to use. The size of it is rather not small, it's almost as big as my printer and it does take some space. But this couple is much more universal in use than some of the cheap "all in ones" , which have some limitations. That's weird but some of those things do not save the image in the computer, they only can print a copy and that's it. The noise at work is less than moderate, I would see much louder scanners. So I like it. This is a good addition to my office. And if you have some extra space around your printer, I recommend you to get this device, you will not be disappointed with the quality of the image that it makes..Read full review

The scanner has only been used for scanning documents and saving the images, and in that regard, the unit has shined. The quality of the scans is excellent, and the scanning time is quite good. The included software is decent, with no problems encountered after installing in Windows Vista. Although the scanner comes with the capability to scan slides, I have not attempted that yet. Overall, the unit is sturdy, and appears to be very similar to the more expensive 8800. Warm up time seems to only take a few seconds. The scanner has its own power cord; although some prefer one less wire, I prefer this, so that power is not sucked out of the computer for the scanner through the USB port. The unit also came with a USB cable, so no additional purchases were necessary. Although this will scanner may not be sufficient for ultra-detailed photo scanning, etc., for the average user it appears to be more than satisfactory with excellent scans. And that, after all, is what you buy a scanner for.Read full review
Scan time and quality is as good as I need so on that level I'm very happy with this slim, light, simple machine. Primary dislike is the god-awful design of its flimsy, clumsy, crappy, negative carrier. Scanning negatives is an exercise in digital torture. The slide carrier is slightly better because slides are less fussy. Scanning documents is its strongest suit.
I wanted to use the product before writing about it, so it has been several months. I am pleased with it's operation. It was easy for me to use because a had the 4200f series, but when I switched over to the Mac i found out that the 4200f was not compatible. I do not expect to ever by another scanner so this one seems to be capable of lasting with modern technology.
The LED scan lights do warm up very quickly, although not quite instantaneously as advertised. Compared to non-LED scanners though, it blows them away in how much quicker the first scan completes. However that difference is only on the very fist scan. I purchased the scanner to use with an iMac running Snow Leopard. The provided driver disk didn't suppport Snow Leopard, but a quick trip to the Canon support website provided me with a working driver. The image quality of the scans is very good, I have not yet tried the negative/slide scan function though.... Overall I would recommend this scanner to anyone interested in purchasing it.
