I purchased this lens because I was getting back into wildlife photography and the 300mm f4L is a surprisingly affordable, top quality lens which is really well suited to bird photography particularly. I use the lens with a Canon 1.4 teleconvertor which pushes the focal length to 420mm and aperture up one stop to f5.6. I usually photograph at f8 and higher so I haven't seen any degradation of images at all but would probably expect to see this when the lens is wide open. Without the teleconvertor fitted the 300 is great right down to f4, auto focus is sharp and fast (although a little noisy) and the two stage ISM works really well. It's a hell of a lot of lens for the money I paid which was about $1330.00 from a HK eBay store - no problems with them either product was spot on and fast shipping.Read full review
The lens is noticeably heavy, especially with an extender for hand held shooting of wild life. Having said that, the “L” series is definitely choice when compared the my standard Canon EF zoom lens. Consider bringing a monopod so one can rest the camera between shots.

I used this lens with a 1.4X extender and was very happy with the sharpness and clarity of images. It is light weight and great for use without support. The extendable hood is an added bonus and should be a standard feature on all lenses as it is very practical. I also used manual focus on close up shots at short distances. Excellent product.
very high quality fixed focal length lens optics are stunning the lens has lovely bokeah and of course image stabilization helps considerably when hand held purchased this lens mainly for bird, and sport shooting.
Superb image quality, great build quality, built in hood, fairly light
