I bought the Canon EF 35-80mm lens because I had just bought my first DSLR and it was an affordable alternative to the 18-55mm kit lens that came with my Canon 1000D XS. New DSLR camera owners who are not seasoned photographers are going to quickly discover that lenses are the real investment in the world of SLR and DSLR cameras. I don't recommend going into this world without doing some serious homework on optics and it is the optics that really make the picture. Most of the lenses recommended by the pros cost significantly more than the commercially priced DSLR camera bodies being sold today (Dec-2009). The kit lenses that are sold with new Canon cameras are rarely of any quality to the pros, however they are the lenses that most people shoot their first pictures with. The Canon EF 35-80 lens was a kit lens sold with older commercially priced Canon Rebel EOS 35mm film cameras. I has an EF mount so it will work with the newer DSLR Canons although you will lose the outer edges of your shot unless you shooting with a full frame model. For the most part this lens is thought of as nothing more than a glorified lens cover that you can take pictures with! It's optics are fair to average at best, the glass is slow, and the auto-focus (AF) is there. This is coming from folks who have used higher quality lenses and have developed the eye to notice these issues. For my part the EF 35-80mm lens is very serviceable, especially for beginners, who are still learning the nuances of quality photography and don't have $2500 to drop on a the better lenses that Canon makes. If anything, this is a good learning lens that operates as an IQ test for what good photography is about. If/When you can recognize the 35-80mm's limitations it's time to move onto better lenses. If you don't get to that point, than you've found yourself a very affordable and potent option to the kit lens that came with your digital shooter and for some folks that's all they need.Read full review
This is a pretty good lens. When it is a bright day outside with ample light this lens works amazingly. It's only when you start shooting in not-perfect conditions where this lens starts to be less-than-spectacular. I am in the process of looking for a new lens to upgrade from this one, but this is definitely a good starters lens and offers enough flexibility to shoot landscapes, macro, and portraits. PROS: - pretty good range. 35mm gives you decent wide angle and the 80mm is respectable when zooming in on close-range objects - good image quality under good conditions - fairly flexible CONS: - 33mm and 80mm are both good, but neither great - good pictures can be hard to come by under less-than-perfect conditions - relatively slow autofocus Overall, this is a good beginner's lens. If you really want to start shooting great pictures you will need to invest in a better (albeit more expensive) one. But I bought this when I was starting out, and it has taken some pretty nice pictures for me, and it has remained sturdy and takes the same pictures now that it did when I first bought it. Hope this helps a little!Read full review
I had purchased a Canon EOS D30 (No. NOT a 30D! They're different, dang it!) camera from Ebay so I could sell, ironically, much of the 35mm film gear I had amassed over the last 40+ years. I bought this 35-80mm Canon zoom from Ebay mostly because of the macro feature, which works beautifully BTW! When I took the lens out of the box, I was amazed at its weight. Or the lack thereof. I was used to my Minolta and Pentax lenses going "thud" on the table. So the first thing that went through my mind was "Oh, boy. Cheap-o!" Wrong! The quality of the images I took were outstanding in every way and the lens's functionality and operation were superb! The lens performed well beyond my expectations! The auto focus worked quietly, smoothly, and cobra-quick! I love the way the light weight lets me wield the body and lens with ease. It's sweet! The only negative I might have is that the viewfinder has three focus sensors across the field, each of which can independently focus the lens. The intent is intelligent: if you want to focus on a subject that is off-center, you can. Unfortunately, when trying to shoot a complex shot, say a crowded street scene, the lens can become "confused", a blinking green alarm will light in the viewfinder, and the lens won't let the camera fire. This is NOT a big deal. The AF/MF focus switch on the lens barrel can be flicked to manual easily without looking and you can then simply focus the lens by hand which is something I am long since used to. But I think I'd prefer a single centered focus sensor. I mean, I know where I want to go. And I don't really need TOO much help. (Note: To be fair to Canon, this is my very first auto focus lens, I've only had it for two months, and this may well be a case of operator inexperience. Time will tell.) I would absolutely recommend this lens to any photog at any level at any time! It's a well-constructed and solidly-fitted device with no wiggle anywhere. I like that it's easy to install on the body because of the positive locking along with a satisfying "click". And--darn it!--the piece is really sexy-looking! I give this Canon 35-80mm lens w/ true Macro function a 5-star rating! Check it out!Read full review
I may be new to photography but I'm experienced at taking photos and this lens was an excellent buy on ebay. The lens on my Rebel T2i stopped working on auto focus, I wanted a quick replacement and came upon the EF III. It's nothing new to me because it's the same lens that's on my Rebel XT. It worked well on my XT and works just as well on my T2I. Simply a very good basic lens that gets the job done.

Upon receiving this lens I mounted it to my T6 and put it through testing. I noticed that at the 50mm focal point that the lens was very loose and sloppy . It didn’t seem to affect the focus much but it was something that had to be paid attention to. For the price I suppose I can’t complain but I will have to get it looked at to see if it can be repaired. All in all it functions.
