This 4 DVD boxed set is a must have for fans of the classic Charlie Chan films of the 1930s. Included in the boxed set are: (1) Charlie Chan at the Opera; (2) Charlie Chan at the Olympics; (3) Charlie Chan at the Race Track & (4) Charlie Chan at the Circus. For Boris Karloff fans, be sure not to miss his role as Mephisto in Charlie Chan at the Opera. As the title indicates, this film takes place on the stage -- as newspaper headlines proclaim that the "madman" (actually amnesiac) Karloff has escaped from a sanitarium. The plot involves a love triangle between the opera's singers. For sports afficionados, Charlie Chan at the Olypics includes actual footage from the 1936 Olympics in Berlin as well as a trip on the famous zeppelin/airship, Hindenburg. Charlie Chan at the Race Track and Charlie Chan at the Circus round out a nostalgic look back at the good old-time matinee classics.Read full review
Volume 2 of the Charlie Chan Collection contains the very best of the series. They are action-packed, fast paced, and also show the home life of the detective. The guest stars are also very good. AT THE OPERA stars the great Boris Karloff. Also appearing is Charlotte Henry, better known as Alice in Alice in Wonderland (1933), and Netta Harrigan, widow of both Walter Connelly and Joshua Logan. A special "opera" was written by Oscar Levant for the film. AT THE OLYMPICS was full of surprises. There is a scene of Chan traveling on the Hindenberg, only a few weeks before it exploded. There are also scenes of the actual 1936 olympics, where Jesse Owens won his medals (in Nazi Germany), In AT THE RACE TRACK,most of the beginning of the film involves the other characters before Chan gets involved in the mystery, which is like the novels of author Biggers. It also is one of the few starring roles of Helen Wood, a Clarksville, TN native and beauty pageant winner. She was to go into radio and bit parts before her retirement. AT THE CIRCUS gets the whole Chan family involved in the action. A killer is loose at the circus where the Chans happen to be at the time. The family interaction is very charming, and #1 son is as exubriant as ever. There are also scenes with actual circus people, especially diminutive brother and sister George and Olive Brasno, who play a married dance team. Once again, lots of action in this brief entry. The acting in all these features is top notch. These were near the last features as Warner Oland and Chan, the las two being ON BROADWAY and AT MONTE CARLO (both 1937).Read full review
This is the second volume in the Warner Oland offerings as the Honolulu detective Charlie Chan and it's a winner! All four films[Race Track,Circus,Opera and Olympics] have had great restoration work done to them.In fact there is a comparison split screen so the average person can see how much the prints have changed for the better. The featurettes that come with the set are also interesting and informative. Tom Layne Jr is the most interesting of the four. The only thing that disapointed me would be the lack of movie trailers for the films. In the first volume they repeated the same one trailer on nearly each of the DVD's.In this set there are none. If anyone who loves the Charlie Chan character and already has all the movies from previous sources you might want to think about upgrading your titles with this fine collection!Read full review
Being an 30's and 40's Mystery fan, How could I not love Charlie Chan Movies? By todays standards they may be out dated and more than a bit campy at times, but I still find them to be highly entertaining and watchable. Sunday afternoon curled up with blanket and pillow in front of the TV with a bowl of popcorn, and a Chan movie, it just doesn't get much better than that. An array of great actors, many were just starting out in these Chan movies. Even though I have all the Chan movies, these refurbished releases offer a chance to view them as they were originally intended, so I just had to have them. I wasn't disappointed, an excelent choice as far as I am concerned. Can't wait for the next box set.
The Charlie Chan movies are just outstanding. They are so well made, the restoration done by the producers is also excellent. This set includes the rare gem, "The Black Camel".....really very rarely if ever seen on television. This is set #3...one more set of four films to go in the Warner Oland performances as Chan. Any detective movie fan will love these films. The price is right and the entertainment value is great. Nice extras are also included.
