I really liked the time period to escape into. This movie has good points & not so good. I can recommend it as a very simple, straightforward movie. You get the message clearly about where women stood in relation to a man, that women are like livestock. A man will own them if he so chooses. Born into a family with very little breeding & money will usually not get you married into wealth. The cinematography however is beautiful. Pride & Prejudice with Colin Firth & the older version of Pride & Prejudice are so much better. I expected more but, I was entertained for a short period of time. Read the other reviews on this movie. They too will back up what is written here. Had I read these, I would have been more cautious about spending my money on this movie. Lesson learned...Always read the reviews on any DVD before purchasing...:) They really help.Read full review
I am a true Jane Austen fan. I also normally love the BBC versions of the classics much more than the more modern Americanized versions. Sadly, this version of Northanger Abbey does not make the cut. For a 1980's film, the video quality was on par with others of it's time. The music however sounded jazzy and did not match whatsoever. After doing my research, the composer had tried to go for a more modern gothic feel. All they ended up doing was making the viewer think "Where is the pianoforte?" and "Who thought Kenny G was a good choice for a Regency film?". While the character of Catherine was well played, I couldn't get over the lackluster Henry. Where is the stellar wit we all love him for? Why would she fall in love with him? I also felt no chemistry between the two actors. In this version, I almost felt John Thorpe the superior choice of the two. Speaking of John Thorpe, the writers have played up both Isabella and John. The pair are particularly malicious and although Catherine is supposed to be viewed as naive, I have to wonder how even the biggest simpleton could have overlooked them for as long as she did. Jane Austen would have certainly not approved of this rendition of the film and neither do I. They have completely deviated from her original words and tried to make a modern gothic romance out of a regency classic. Save your time and money on this one, it just isn't worth it.Read full review
I absolutely hated this version of Northanger Abbey. The music did not fit. The acting was bad. Half of the time I was worried that Katherine's eyes were going to pop right out of her head. Was that the actresses idea of wide-eyed amazement? Disgusting. I have forced myself through this movie twice and was severely disappointed both times (the second veiwing after reading the book with the off chance that I might like it better). There is a new version put out with PBS... it has gotten better reviews, so if you want to complete a Jane Austen collection, buy that DVD. Anything could be more palatable than this horrid thing.
They obviously spent no more than 10 pounds making this mess. Jane Austen would be flipping in her grave if she saw it. The lead actress is a terrible actress and the lead actor comes off like a big flaming queen. The plot was so muddled and so hacked up from the story Jane wrote that it is unrecognizable as a Jane Auster novel. I couldn't even watch the last half hour, it was THAT BAD!!!
I love Jane Austen. I am trying to collect all of her books. So when I saw this movie I bought it. Unlike, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion, this movie is dull and has a disappointing ending. It just ends without tying up all the loose ends. However the cinematography is beautiful, the costumes are well done. I will keep it but it will never be a favourite.
