The ESP-01 microcontroller module is often cheaper than Arduino Nano clones, and I thought those were cheap. The ESP has a much faster processor and more storage/RAM for more complex code. It also has WiFi which makes it perfect for integrating your projecs into the "Internet of Things". It does operate at 3.3V, so if you're used to 5V Arduino boards you'll need to grab some regulators. It can be programmed using the Arduino IDE with ESP8266 plugins. I am using a bunch of these for RGB WS2811 Christmas lights and decorations which all sync to music via WiFi.

After success with Bluetooth on an Arduino UNO, I decided to try WiFi. This ESP was a good price and arrived on time and in good shape. Unfortunately, setting up the software and AT operating modes did not go well. While I did manage to partially command the unit, I never achieved getting the unit to work properly. There is extensive information on the web, but it didn't really help - too many conflicting approaches. I eventually gave up and bought a Particle Photon, which is more expensive but worked immediately on an easy set up. I believe the ESP-01 is an early version know to be difficult to set up. I'd recommend a later unit, maybe a ESP-12, I think, if the price is good.

I bought this to make http GET requests to a link in order to insert data into a MySql DB, but it doesn't work fine as a client. As a server it works OK but can not send responses to clients!

After "ready" speed 115200 bps is not reliable. An AT command to set a speed to 19200 bps assure a good reliability.
