This biography has it all – extraordinary depth of research, beautiful writing, great sensitivity around human strengths and weaknesses and also a sense of humour. A lot of academics can't write – they can't get out of the lets-complicate-this-as-much-as-we-can approach of academic writing – but Sheila Rowbotham has a wonderfully light touch when necessary, and the intellectual heft when necessary, all clearly expressed. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
