Flook: Ed Boyd (guitar); Brian Finnegan, Sarah Allen (flute); John Joe Kelly (bodhran). Additional personnel: Martin Cradick. With RUBAI, Flook combines pop with traditional Irish folk music. However, great attempts have been made here to maintain the roots of this music and not move too far into a commercial vein. Only traditional instruments are used on this recording including flute, acoustic guitar, and bodhran--an Irish frame drum. Overall, the music on RUBAI is very lyrical and inviting. The lilting "Larry" features a bouncy flute melody replete with Celtic trills and rolling triplets. Other tracks such as "Rosbeg" and "Ballybrolly Jigs" use a driving backbeat. On the latter, Flook employs a variety of syncopated figures. These angular rhythms purposely offset the pop leanings of this composition. The traditional jig "Natterjack" firmly establishes the traditional undercurrents of RUBAI. Moreover, the quartet's ability to navigate through the complex arrangement highlights their instrumental virtuosity. Finally, the inclusion of five non-titled hidden tracks adds to the charm of this recording. On some of these closing pieces, the instrumentation is fleshed out by the use of mandolin and accordion.
