Widowed Classics Professor Thomas Bradley (Billy Zane) is about to lose his research grant studying ancient love spells. He knows he is close to a major academic breakthrough and desperately needs more time to complete his research. Thomas is given one last chance to finish his work, and goes to the Greek island of Spetses, where he has been invited to stay at the home of a supportive Oxford don Professor Coulter. Thomas brings along his 12 year-old daughter, Serena (Amber Savva). The house is in tolerable condition, and Serena finds a book about mermaids that has an ancient Greek inscription on the cover. Serena is supportive of her father and readily asks him about ancient mythology, but feels that he dedicates too much of himself to his work. The pair meet a fisherman named Captain Mavros (Alki David) and his son Dimitri (Felix Yanez); Dimitri develops a crush on Serena. Neried, who can only gain legs at night, travels on land to meet Thomas. When they initially cannot get along, Serena asks that Neried only help her father translate some old relics for his work. Neried does, and when she and Thomas speak the ancient love spell in unison, they fall in love with each other. Thomas realizes that the writing on the book Serena had discovered earlier is the key to understanding all the ancient text, enabling him to continue his work.Read full review
This film starring Kelly Brook, Billy Zane, and Amber Savva is very funny and pure wholesome family entertainment! Although "Fishtales" never generated much money at the box office, I have to wonder why. It reminds me of a classic Disney picture, such as Little Mermaid, only this mermaid is alive and not computer generated. Kids get enough sexually-explicit television on prime-time TV these days, I think if more films were as hilarious and entertaining as Fishtales, without all the added sexually-explicit pun, perhaps kids wouldn't think they have to behave like adults before their time and teenage pregnancies might also decrease. I love the wholesome girl-next-door image Amber portrayed as Serena Bradley. Although Miss Brook has captured mens hearts with her shirtless shots and pinup physique for quite some time, for me it was great seeing the woman fully clothed for a change, sparkling as a vibrant actress. Kelly's performance was spectacular, while portraying a gamut of emotions: laughter, sorrow, happiness, fulfillment, with fragments of fright speckled throughout its script. The pair (Kelly and Amber) reminded me of a loving mother/daughter, even though both characters obviously come from two separate worlds. If only more fathers would take more time out of their cramped working days (like Zane in Fishtales, vacationing together at a beautiful paradise resort with his child), perhaps more kids free time could be spent more productively while away from school. Although Professor Bradley's (Zane's) intensions are good, while failing his daughter slightly (as he maintains a busy workload), the picture still ends on a happy note. The widow gets the bride; the child is no longer motherless; and all three live happily ever after, like any other well-written fairy tale. Don't believe all the negative press this film has generated; I highly recommend this DVD! It's excellent from start to finish. Two thumbs up!Read full review

My daughter loves mermaids, (she even pretends to be a mermaid) and therefore she is in love with this movie. Adults can also enjoy this movie; it has some funny humorist parts :-) If your daughter loves mermaids she will like this movie.
Great price for a like new DVD. Pretty decent story as far as mermaid movies go, this movie is loved by my 4 year old, but it is a good family film as well. Mermaid actress looks quite convincing as the real thing in her outfit and when she swims in the water.
