Rid Your Property Of Unwanted Vermin With Quality Traps

Do you have a problem with feral animals or vermin taking over your property or business? If you’re hunting for a great animal trap (to help with hunting for the animals), you’re in the right place with eBay.

Types of cats, rodent & animal traps

There are three main types of animal traps available.

  1. Cage traps (live traps): Cage traps are used to capture live animals within a cage. They are generally lured in with food bait or a live "lure" animal. Cat food and fish are common baits. Cage traps typically feature a trigger in the back of the cage that closes one of the doors; other traps with two doors have a trigger in the middle that closes both doors. The closing of the doors and the falling of a lock mechanism in any type of cage prevents the animal from escaping by locking the door(s) shut.
  2. Glue traps: Glue traps (also known as adhesive or sticky traps) are produced by applying adhesive to cardboard or other similar materials. A smell can be added to the glue, or bait can be placed in the centre; alternatively, the traps can be placed in animal routes. Indoors, glue board traps are generally used for rodent and insect control. Outdoors, glue traps are unsuccessful because environmental conditions (moisture, dust) quickly degrade the adhesive.
  3. Snares: Traditional snares are nooses made of tethered cable or wire that are used to catch wild animals, such as rabbits, however lethal snares are illegal in Australia. Non-kill snares, however, are approved and are permitted for control of wild dogs, in particular.

Which traps are best for which animal?

In Australia, you can trap the following:

  • Rabbits
  • Hares
  • Crabs
  • Foxes
  • Feral cats
  • Wild dogs
  • Feral goats
  • Feral pigs
  • Buffalo
  • Feral donkeys
  • Wild horses
  • Wild camels
  • Deer
  • Waterfowl
  • Quails
  • Pigeons
  • Pheasant

For mice and rats it depends on the habitat and diet but for mice, you can usually get away with using the small old-school mouse traps, with a little peanut butter on the mechanism to lure them in. For rats, you might be better with a cage trap.

For possums, cats and rabbits: Feral cats can grow larger than domestic cats, and a folding cage trap is usually ideal for catch them. Professional trappers should use a non-collapsible trap instead.

For bush turkeys: There are traps specifically made to catch scrub turkeys, where you put a mirror behind the trap on the male’s nest and he’ll see himself in the mirror, think another bloke is trying to take over his nest, and charge into attack. Females can be lured in with bird seed or watermelon.

For foxes: A cage trap that measures 1100mm long, 500mm wide and 600mm high is ideal and it might surprise you, but it’s said that KFC is the best bait to use to lure them in.

Wild dogs: A cage trap that measures 1500mm long, 800mm high and 600mm wide is used by most councils or conservation groups. You can also use soft jaw or laminated jaw footing traps.
