After the previous and remarkably good album Moontan, this follow up 1975 album by Golden Earring appears indeed to be a Switch, partly in direction and partly in progression. An album of very much two parts, two sides, two personalities with Side 1 showing a progression in the prog rock aspects of Golden Earring, and Side 2, well, whether it was Golden Earring trying out a change in direction to gauge listener feedback or whether the band was playing the game with their record company and aiming to have some more radio friendly songs on the album, particularly after the phenomenal success of Radar Love from the aforementioned Moontan album. While there is some pop aspects to Side 2 of the album, it comes across as a bit of a mire on the first couple of listens. In face, while Moontan has a large degree of immediacy in its appeal, Switch demands the listener to play the album a number of times before the enjoyable aspects of the album begin to take hold. Is this an essential Golden Earring album? I doubt it. Is it an album for fans of the band? Arguably yes. HJaving said as much, I did find myself enjoying the album, some parts on first listen, others after several listens, and a couple songs that I thought could have been left off. Still happy with my purchase, still a big fan of the band.Read full review
