Like most modern "glow in the dark" gadgets, they need to be "charged" with a bright light before they glow properly... making finding keys in the dark challenging because you have to illuminate them first... However, they still glow faintly so they do work well enough to spot keys dropped in the backyard!
The plastic cover over the text area is quite thick and makes reading the text quite hard.
