Ian Fairweather (1891-1974) is widely acknowledged as one of the most important Australian artists of the 20th century. His work is interpreted here in a series of essays edited by Murray Bail. Mary Eagle analyzes several of his most important works painted at his shack on Bribie Island off the coast of Queensland; Drusilla Modjeska dwells on the personal relevance of the mother and child subject, and Martin Armiger delights in the recurrence of musical references in his work.
