Whether you enjoy this album depends on the version of the Beastie Boys which most appeals to you. "Licence to Ill" is ground breaking and exciting to some people, puerile and rapidly irritating to others. "Paul's Boutique" is either stodgy and a career full-stop, or an innovative eye opener that even today gets better and better. My favourite is "Ill Communication" and "5" is similar, though inferior, to this. There is melody and groove a-plenty, but none of the fantastic funk-tangents that appear from "Ill Communication" and lose you in their flow, only when they have ended do you realise that you are listening to a rap record with no rap. New York and the Beasties fit together like Morrissey and Manchester or Gary Glitter and, err, prison, so a home-town tribute was always on the cards, particularly in the aftermath of September 11th. The Skyline artwork, with twin towers reinstated, unfolds beautifully into a Manhattan coastline showing imagination and affection unusual in these days of cheap CD packaging. The tracks unwind in the same way most Beasties albums do, an idea developing into 3 or 4 minutes of tune, each ending abruptly before it becomes too familiar, and then the next idea takes over. You will never be short of nasal, sneery rapping along with clever humour playing a Beasties album, these come naturally to the Boys and standards haven't slipped here. So we can consider this another solid effort. No-one will be converted to the Beastie Boys by this album, but no fan will be disappointed either. If you have a few Beasties CDs already, this is certainly worth investing in. If you are new to the Boys, give it a try, but keep a keener eye open for “Ill Communication.”Read full review
good to see the beasties are still knocking out old school rap/hip hop - only thing about this cd is it plays as one long track in the cd player in the car so you have to listen to the whole album as one song
one "hell of a" hip hop album. there best work yet. hooked from 1st listening . tracks smoothly laid out ,creates old skool hip hop / new skool fusion. not as whaky as other beastie boys albums. very polished album . true work of hip hop genius
