I saved this book for bedtime reading. I read many books as part of my job, so when I come across one that as rich as this one, it is pure joy for me. The rich historical details of Renaissance life and the decadence and intrigue of Venice create a warm fantasy of perfect relaxation reading before bedtime. The unusual relationship between the mistress and her manager is both perverse and practical while the characters from the warm lands of the Mediterranean present a rich character counterpoint of romance and commerce. I loved the romance, the intrigue and especially the warmth of the fantasy life at the Mistress' palazzo. Bellisima!
This novel is set in Rome and Venice of 1527. The story is told from the point of view of Bucino, a dwarf, who is business manager and a friend to Fiammetta Bianchini. Without giving away the good stuff, the story centers on the life of the courtesan and what it means to not only survive but become part of the higher social life of the city (Venice). What I liked most about it was the descriptions of the every day life in Venice in the Middle Ages. Also, the story line was interesting with it's twists and turns and surprises. I rate this 4-1/2 stars out of 5.
The author must have spent ages researching her history for this plot....being familiar with current day Venice indicated to me at the onset of the story she knew what she was writing about..... This would make a movie superior to GWTW. The colors, scenery, and costumes would out do the recent film, Casanova in scope and plot.... I intend to read everything written by Dunant, it's so refreshing to find a female author who doesn't write gratuitous chick flick, soap style romance stories.
