Staying 'current' doesn't mean you need to get the latest processors money can buy.
I have just built my first gaming PC after more than a decade - long years using consoles. It is not fully configured yet but I can already see the performance difference between consoles and PC. It is beyond what I have expected. As for the Intel Core i7-8700K, it is (for me at this time) the best value for money with out sacrificing gaming with 1440P @ 144Hz or driving a big hole in your wallet spending on the more expensive 9th generation Intel Core processors - of course with a capable GPU. Fantastic!
This processor performs great and is perfect for what i wanted it for! (eg: twitch streaming and processing of youtube videos!) My computer coupled with 16GB of DDR4 RAM now runs super fast and everything opens and runs really along. Along with my SSD my PC starts up and is at the desktop in about 5 seconds which is great if i'm in hurry! Was reasonably easy to install, but as always with CPUs, patience key, don't rush when installing it into your motherboard. I have not overclocked it yet but the turbo works. Using arctic silver and a hyper 212x my temps are only between 30-40 degrees. My ASUS mobo also seems to underclock it significantly when idle, so I know I'm saving a little power. Overall...no problems.
