I loved Anne Lamott's Traveling Mercies, so I couldn't wait to listen to Joe Jones. Unfortunately this book doesn't compare. In many ways it's typical of Lamott's style--a collection of wounded souls find solace in one another--but rather than being lovable, the characters are often irritating and their reactions hard to understand. But the biggest problem is the lack of a narrative thread. There's really no story. I know some people claim the story is found in the characters--sorry, I have 2 degrees in literature and there is very little narrative here. It's a collection of incidents that don't add up to any narrative thrust. I made myself stay with it, but probably wouldn't have if not for the fact that I listened during my long commute to and from work.
