This filter fits in place of the factory Yamaha filter in the Speedstar air cleaner on the Road Star Warrior. Only. Does not fit the factory “teardrop” air cleaner or the air box under the tank. It’s also worth noting that this filter, while undoubtedly flowing more air, isn’t reinforced around the perimeter as the factory unit is. The design uses two tabs on either side to hold the filter in, which isn’t a problem on the factory filter due to the metal reinforced edge and the layer of foam backing. It seals fine. The K&N is made of soft silicone rubber with no reinforced edge though and while the tabs hold the side down I could easily create a gap in the center top and bottom. I know this is basically a pre-filter and there’s a second filter in the air box but if it’s supposed to seal it should seal (reason for my 4 stars rating). My solution was to put some non-hardening “gorilla snot” form-a-gasket sealant around the edge. True RTV would work too but would need to be cut to remove the filter for cleaning. The other option would be to cut the center part out of the factory filter and use the reinforced rim as a plate to hold the K&N filter in. I’m saving the factory unit and if I see evidence of leaking I will add it as double insurance. I’d like to see K&N modify the design to accommodate a metal reinforced edge but with the 5 of these they probably sell a year it wouldn’t be cost effective I’m afraid. Bought these filters for my Yamaha warrior 1700 needed two of the same kind. Somewhat easy to install. Made a huge difference in performance, mostly because my filters were really dirty. So the before and after was dramatic.
